I thought I had answered your querry about functional side pipes on another forum, but maybe it was someone with a logon name like yours. Try here for your pipes:

The part in the middle is actually a muffler and it attaches to the end of the CAT to make it all legal. Price for whole system is about $900. I see you said it was a dead end on this site...why?

JC Whitnay also has some side pipes:

Hi Crewzin; Yes that was me before....when I called the number on the site with this system you posted, the sales staff didn't know anything about installation on it....I have finally talked to the manager and asked how can they sell something that no one can answer basis questions on? He has since sent me instructions which I'm now bringing to my shop....I can't understand why this item is not popular with pt owners....IT HAS THE LOOK! I also found a system on calcruisers.com...but I've heard they are not reliable....Thanks for your information, I will keep board posted.....turbomangt

I would believe that the reason this particular addition isn't that popular is because it was just introduced as an option. The people that were adding exhaust before this, jumped on the dual exhaust option and laid out a considerable amount of money to do so...anywhere from $500 up. Now this system is available and it will run around $1100 by the time you get it installed. If you can do it yourself, it's still around $900. Would you want to throw away the first set of dual exhaust if you laid out that money? And, it will leave two nice rounded indents in the rear bumper where the duals used to go. Not to mention that I believe in some states, exhaust has to exit the car anywhere in back of the rear tire, which would make the side exhaust illigal. It's not a really big muffler either, so it might be quite loud even though some of the sound would go out the side. There's no way to hear what they sound like because they are to new and noone has it to listen to. I do know of a fellow in my Florida PT club that has what I think is the JC Whitney side pipes...they have a low rumble and are quite loud from outside, not sure about the sound inside.

Forgot to mention, that if it's just the "LOOK" your after, the fake lake pipes that are sold at a few different aftermarket places, come in different lengths, and different diameters and with some (like mine) you can take the end cap off to make it look real. I've had quite a few people ask if they were real....just a thought.

Not to mention they get really hot, and could burn your rear passenger's leg when entering/exiting your PT.

Jody,

The ones pictured above from Wyckoff have a heat shield on them. It's hard to see in the picture I posted, but if you look at them installed on the site you will see what I mean. The shield is "supposed" to protect anyone from being burned if they touch it.

I'm glad that I logged in here so I can get different opinions. I did in fact stop by a muffler shop today and talked to the owner about the side system. He brought up some points I never even thought about. Like the clearance with that system. He said that the car might not even be able to go on a rack because of where the pipes are. Plus, where I live in Chicago with the winter weather and salt on the streets, he said that a chrome plated system would not hold up. I guess it pays to walk before you buy....turbomangt
