There are two really well-written articles on the extruded grills on ptdoityourself.net. The second article ends with the conclusion that the grill needed to be replaced after ten months, but the writer considered the project a success. I found the article really good - my takeaway was extruded may be ok, but not on the grill because of the extreme temps.
