Default Push button lock on 5-speed.

I recently bought a low mileage used 2002 PT 5-speed. Drove both it and an automatic but decided the 5 speed felt much faster. Can anyone tell me why there is a push button lock on the ignition switch. I bought a service manual but there is nothing about it listed. As far as I can see it serves no purpose other than to annoy me.
I have always liked the PT and am happy to own one. Reading this forum helped in the decision to buy. A recent pay cut and possible lay off will keep me from doing much to the car but I'm getting a lot of good ideas when and if I have some money to put in to some future upgrades. The car I bought had vent visors, step pad, rear splash guards, and a cargo mat so I don't need much.

It locks IN the key- you need to depress it to move from ACC to OFF, its only in the 5 spds.

I know what it does because I have been driving the car for a while. I'm just curious as to it's purpose. Doesn't appear to be a safety item just a minor annoyance. I'm trying to find out if any owners out there have found a way to disable it without a lot of work.
