Default Short Antenna

Does anyone use a short antenna on their Cruiser? Any loss of reception? Would they work well in a large metro area like Detroit?[8D]

I have one. Here is the Los Angeles area it seems to work well. I have to admit, however, that I only use my radio for news stations to check of traffic.

I have the 18...size does matter if the stations you like to listen to aren't real local.

Thanks for the info. One retailer said they dropped the 10" because of complants. I guess I will go with the 18".[8D]

I like the looks of the 18. It would look real stubby any shorter. Even the 18 doesn't look very big.

15.5 inch would be the best choice.

FM is tuned for a 31 inch car antenna. That's called a 1/4 wave. There's no room for a 124 inch full wave antenna. That would be the best reception.
Deviating from the tuned length will severely degrade reception.

A 15.5 inch antenna will be a 1/8 wave and will work much better than either a 10 or 18 inch rod.

Sounds scientific. Can I just cut the stock antenna to 15.5?

Yes.

A rough end on the OEM antenna may look bad. Shorty's are only about $10. My time to cut, smooth the end, and paint the bare metal is worth more than $10.
