Mine is going in on Wednesday for the steering column to be replaced. There is a Tech Service Bulletin for this problem, but not sure of the number. All work is being carried out under warranty.

OK so the steering wheel makes a noise, mine does too.
But is it really a serious enough of a problem for chrysler to
replace the rack and pinion? So what if I don't get it replaced,
what will happen?[:I]

dev,

I have the same noise and have asked myself the same questions, but the big question is, why should we have a possible future problem in a car not even 1 year old. If you're only leasing it and won't buy it out I agree with you "who cares". I plan to buy it out at the end so I won't let these little things go without an effort for repair. Chances are the problem will go from minor to major right after the warranty is over, plus if we leave all the "minor" problems we might as well just go out and buy a used car.

We've noticed a "rubbery squeak" when we turn the wheel in Prudence ('01), as well.
Just got back from the dealer, and thought I'd follow this up with their info. Service Manager said that it's a rubber gasket that's drying out (he said probably from the fact that the car only had 1,700 miles put on it in its first two years). Their procedure is to use a lubricant on it. They did, and it still makes the noise. He said to give it about five days, for the lube to distribute evenly, and if it STILL makes the noise, bring it back, and they'll do it again. If (after five more days after the second lube) it STILL makes the noise, then they'll see about replacing anything further. He said flat out that if they ordered a rack without trying the lube thing two times, DC would kick the warranty claim back at them.

So....guess we wait five days, and if it still squeaks, we go back.

I have been feeling a rubbing when I turn the wheel but I don't hear a sound. Do you suppose it is one of these problems that are being discussed here? How do I find and read these service tech notices?

They ordered a rack & pinion today. At least they didn't make me wait ANOTHER five days before they ordered it![:0]

This is very timely. Last night my '03 Turbo started to make the "rubber squeek". I tried adjusting the steering column height. This is the first problem that I've had, so wish me luck as I get ahold of the dealer. BTW, I tried to use the links to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr.../tsbsearch.cfm to search for the tsbs and nothing came up for those numbers.

Hi TurboT. The numbers I found came from the PT Do-It-Yourself website. The three numbers can be found at items 39, 49 and 73 of their list of TSBs. Good luck.
