I have heard only about illegal mods. Now NOS is not illegal but could be considered dangerious. I have seen cars in wrecks ignite because of NOS.

I figure the flammable pressurized gas in the nitrous system is not much more of a threat than the gallons of highly flammable liquid in the fuel system.

The bigger problem is NOS triggering wrecks by being a favorite of the street racer set. The stuff has no legitimate use anywhere but the drag strip and the dentists office.

Many car insurance policies contain a clause concerning 'racing equipment' as grounds to cancel a policy. Unlike intake and exhuast mods, even superchargers, you cannot come up with at plausible street use like: 'I drive a lot at high altitudes with a full load'.

(Back in the 50's my Dad had insurance canceled under the racing equipment clause after he installed seat belts in his 51 Ford.)

I have GEICO and had a slight mishap (ran into back of a motorcycle tire at about 5 mph drifting at a light).

Damage was one of the screws holding the bottom section of my E&G billet grille got yanked out and there was scuff marks on my front bumper - very small.

They not only covered my aftermarket billet grille, they allowed me to replace it with a chrome grille, and they are paying for me to replace my stock bumper with a xenon crusher.

All I had to do was ask! Look at your policy. I never inquired about aftermarket parts, but my policy covers them up to $1000 and I can get additional covered very cheap.

Every question I asked they were like "SURE, we can cover that."

Then they told me my rates are NOT going up after the claim, including the motorcycle tire claim. I think it's because I had been with them for eight years, no accidents.

I recommend GEICO, when I was shopping around a few years ago they were the cheapest of three I checked out so I stayed with them.

As for not insuring cars with NOS or flames, insurance companies are regulated but in most states they are free to turn away customers for whatever reason they deem fit. Most decisions not to renew policies are based on "experience rating", which includes lots of factors they compile in a computer. That's why different insurers have different rules for who they'll insure - their decisions are based on their past history. So if the computer indicates that cars with flames have a high incidence of accidents, they can choose not to insure - not because flames might catch fire, but because their computer models show that people who put flames on their car have high incidence of accidents.

I don't have mods, just another plug for USAA. I doubt they would care about any mods, probably add them to the insurance. Best insurance company I've ever dealt with. Came out THE SAME DAY we reported damage after Hurrican Isabel (not the PT's, had a van that did not fit in the garage and received minor damage). They waved the deductible for any damage caused by the hurricane!

Welcome to the forum, patoloco. I agree fully--USAA is the very best! I have had my auto and home policies with them for over 30 years now and never a problem. If you qualify, by all means, go with USAA. [^]

We had our 2002 Deep cranberry broke into they mostly did alot of cometic damage except for the window and atv in one headrest but our insurance says that insurance dont cover anything in a brreak-in anymore they have to steal the car before they will pay to fix it and you still have to pay the deductable. I think I should become a insurance CO. Charge you alot of money every year and then not pay to fix anything on your car either. I would have lots of money to fix my pt's then.

well I had State farm for 18 years and after my wife had here licence suspended here in PA. for a non driving thing, nothing to do with speeding or anything like that ,they state farm dropped her like a hot potato. They wanted me to sign an exclusinery form that she would not drive any vehicles that I own. Now granted with state farm we were paying 345.00 for our 2002 zx2 escort per 6 monthes and 408.00 for my 2003 GT . well since i had to go shopping for insurance I started to look around and I looked at geiko(sp) and then I stumbled onto progressive on the web ,they had no problem insuring my wife and we told them that she had the suspension and the total premium for 6 monthes with the same coverages except 100.00 deductable on comp was 410.00 per 6 monthes. So now since I had only 1 car with state farm I lost the multicar discount and since they had a rate increase at state farm(the rat bast**ds they raised my premium to 555.00 for 6 monthes ,now I'm pissed and I called progressive they not only insured my car but for the same coverage as I had at state farm except the 100.00 deductable on comp my premiem is 333.00 for 6 monthes on my gt and sice I carry the 100.00 collision deductable Im entitled to 1000.00 coverage on performance parts and I bought 1000.00 more coverage on performance parts so i have 2000.00 in coverage on after market parts and you can buy more if you want.
plus I got the multicar discount now which lowered wifes car to 354.00.State farm are worse than the stealers we bought our cars from . You owe it to your self to compare rates if you are with state farm they will bleed you to death and progressive will sell you performance coverage so my total premium for 2 cars for 6 monthes is 687.00 which is about 137.00 nore than State farm wanted for just my GT. just my 2 cents sorry for the rant but do some comparitive shopping you might be amazed.......
I guess I am confused....your wife no longer had a driver's license, so the insurance company quickly dropped her vehicle from your policy because SHE WAS NO LONGER A LEGAL DRIVER, and you think that's wrong?

You probably had her as a secondary driver on your car, so they wanted you to realize that allowing an unlicensed driver woudl not have coverage in your vehicle, and you think that's wrong too?

I guess I don't see the reason to complain in this situation?

USAA is trying to drop us from their policy. I mean this is really wrong IMO because we've had 6 cars at one time covered by our insurance.

We sold the other ones and now we're down to four. 2 pt cruisers, 1 suburban, and 1 honda civic SI.

USAA is threatning to drop NYTMARE - my panel cruiser because it has to MANY MODS. They will NOT cover a car with ANY suspension modifications, or major body work (like a panel), they said if we don't get other insurance for this car our policy will be canceled.

We have tried to work something out with them because this car will be garaged, driven 1 time a week (so it will still be in good driving condition) and TRAILERED to car shows! They still said no because we have I.C.E, paint, body kit, and other MAJOR mods.

To my knowledge USAA doesn't like any modifications to cars and they refuse to cover it. We have had this policy with USAA for 31 YEARS... not a nice way to treat family like customers.....

so any help woth INSURANCE THAT WILL cover heavily mod'ed cars would be a great help!

So USAA wants you to turn NYTMARE into a full-time trailer queen?
Maybe you should have stuck to street racing

Or get specialty vehicle insurance:
