opinion wanted on chrome side spears

I have been wanting to put chrome side spears on my 2001 Ltd for some time now. Could I get some opinions from those of you that have this mod?

1) Which is better, the type that replaces the original or fits over the original?

2) Where is the best place to get them?

3) Are there any I should absolutely stay away from?

4) I am not very skilled when it comes to car stuff, so I would getting one that is least likely to cause problems would be a plus for me

5) Any gotchas during/after installation I should be aware of?

I'll let others answer your question on the spears, but thought I'd show you an alternative. I personally didn't like the "spears" and saw these highly reflective polished stainless steel flat inserts that took the place of the door spears. (I don't think the OEM spears really do any good in stopping door dings anyway). Besides, I love to show off pictures of my cruiser! Just something to think about.

Here are some links to both types, the first link is an install guide for the type that replaces the original. You may want to check that out to see what's involved in installing the replacement door spears as compared to just placing the other type over your present door spears.

I used the "go over" kind. Easy to install, look great, and I like having the styling lines created by this kind. Just be sure when you install them that you push the ones on the rear doors as far back as possible or they will rub on the trailing edge of the front doors when you open and close the rears.

I installed the replacement spears.....bought them at the local chrysler parts department....original design, easy to install, but it helps to be in a warm climate, and do it on a warm sunny day outside, sun and heat help with the original tape, as you remove the originals.....if not you'll need a heat gun...I'm out..Mo.....good luck!

[8D]I also installed the chrome "skins" that you put over the original spears. I'm not too handy either but I had NO PROBLEM with the installation and have had NO PROBLEMS with them since I put them on (my PT is NEVER garaged). I got mine from Moss Motors, they are very simple to install and look great.
When I got mine they were 149.00 per set, shipped in five days and really fit well.
