Default no duplicate keys ???

Went to Walmart yesterday to get a duplicate
key made for a hide-a-key to unlock door if I
ever lock my keys in car again.[xx(]Anyway the
guy said he couldn't because of the chip inside
the key. the machine might mess it up.I said ,I have had
it done before with other chip keys and had no problem.
Anyway is this a fact?[:I]

Take it to a regular hardware store (ACE) or a key shop and they can make a key that will only unlock your door and not start the engine and it won't mess up the electronics in the original key.

Haven't heard that before. The only way is that the electric field produced by the grinder motor was strong enough to cause grief to the chip - sounds unlikely. [:I]

I bought one on EBAY for $18.00 and took to my dealer and they cut it for nothing. You will get with the key the instruction on how to program the new key and will save you 1/2 hour labor that the dealer wants to program the key. YOu have to have the programable key for it to work.

If you have a grey key then it has the chip.

You can cut a key (chipped or not) just to unlock your door. If you plan on programming the key yourself, you need 2 valid keys before you can program the spare (the 3rd, 4th, or more keys up to 8) key. http://www.ptdoityourself.net/ptfaq1.html

I thought that if your car had the chip (and subsequent anti-theft "alarm") that if you opened the car door with any key other than the chipped key, that the alarm would be triggered. I know if you open the door from the inside with the door locked that the alarm (horn) will sound.

What am I missing? [:I]

?? I open mine from inside with doors locked all the time, no alarm. The locks go on automatically when you hit 12 MPH, so it's just about always locked - I never unlock before opening door, no alarm.
Are alarms different???[:I]

I believe the alarm will sound only if the doors have been locked using the FOB, this sets the alarm, I know I used it to lock from the inside at the Drive-In and when I opened the door from inside without unlocking the alarm did go off, I was not the most popular guy at the show that night but it sure did get people to notice the car!!!

So what I'm hearing is that you can use the "plain" key to pen the doors w/o triggering the alarm as long as the alarm isn't on (by either using the remote or by locking the doors via the inside door switch).

If that's the case, then are the security features of the "chipped" key (both external alarm and starter-kill) sacrificed just in order to use a plain key?

If that's the case, it seems to be a pretty hefty risk just to save buying a spare "chipped" key if anyone can just start up the car with a department store "plain" spare key since you'd unable to use the PT's security features. [:I]
