Default ATF4

Went to my dealer to get a quart of ATF 4
tranny fluid. I like to have some on hand.
It was 10.44 for a quart[:0].I told the gal, they
are sure proud of this stuff. Any place to get it
cheaper?[:I]

I would just go with a Synthetic for a couple dollars more.

I haven't found it anywere else. But If you use anything else it will not make your 41TE (A604) Happy, and will ruin itself quickly.

MX-5
Reread your post from Sept. including the letter from Thomas Smith at Valvoline. In it he mentions that their new trans fluid offers "enhanced shudder protection". This reminded me that I have, on occasion, noticed a slight shudder in my PT as the auto trans shifts - usually in to high. I was a little concerned and planned to have the dealer look at it in the spring (car is in storage now). But, it's one of those things that doesn't happen every time so I don't know how much luck I will have at the dealer [:I]. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it "normal" ? (2003 NA automatic).

My mechanic put in ATF+5, and MX-5 said that's okay, too.

GW,
The MaxLife Valvoline is the same ATF+4 as Mopar. You won;t find any changes in shifting, other than the benefit of new & clean fluid.

Valvoline makes the Mopar fluid.

The ATF+5 is the newest blend of synthetic additives. You can always use a newer blend. They are backwards compatable. Do not use an old formula (ATF+3, or Dexron) in a newer car.

I just got a reply from Redline Oil that their C+ ATF is suitable for use in the PT Cruiser in place of the ATF4:

http://www.redlineoil.com/redlineoil/atfti.htm#CATF

Royal Purple does not offer anything for the DCX trannies:
