Default Recommended warm-up time

hey guys,me again with a simple but somewhat uncovered question for me:

what is an adequate warm-up time for our cars? i notice when starting my pt,the rpm goes up to about 1100 and in about 3 mins(depending on weather)goes back down to normal idle(about 900)....sometimes i'm so much in a hurry i can't wait for that time and just go easy for a few min while driving..
is it ok to do that?

thanks ahead of time..

I have been meaning to ask that very same question!

I wait until it drops to 800 RPM at idle before I take off and do not move a moment before, ever. If it has not been sitting long (like running to a store), I only wait 15-30 seconds if the coolant temp is non-zero.

The only thing that you should need to do is to wait a few seconds for the oil pressure to build. Other than that I don't do any 5000 RPM blasts for the few minutes it takes for the engine temp to get up to operating temp. It is usually there within a few minutes of normal driving. Letting a car idle to warm up for any lenght of time really does nothing but waste fuel these days. The multi viscosity oils really flow well even at starup temps. (well startup temps in So Cal)

I agree with Cal Cruiser, just make sure the oil pressure is up, cruise easy from then on, until full warm up. I used this same info when I lived in Michigan where the temps were low in a unheated unattached garage.

i wish i had your temp, for sure..but here in ny we get all kinds of temps,i'm mostly worried of this time of year, when it's been between 0-20 degrees

I usually do the same as Cal Cruzer. It doens't take long for the temp to get up. I have to turn my heater down after driving less than 2 miles.

I warm my GT up for a couple of minutes and then drive easy until the temp gauge says Go![8)]

Everything I've read recommends against static warm-up. They say to drive the car slowly. When you warm-up at idle, you're not warming up transmission. Just don't "goose" it until warm.
