Default Good/Bad news horns

Well I got my horns in yesterday , the German horns that replaced the stock horns sound good, nice and loud, good quality. (Thats to TripleJack and Gearhear head for pointing me in the right direction) However my A U-Ga horn sounds more like a animal dieing in pain begging to be put out of their misery. I guess I blew that one. My installer put in a switch in my fuse box, so the wheel botton works both horns. Pretty cool, just flip the switch to work either one. Now I have to get rid of that dead animal and I will be good to go. I think I will try a trumpet horn, don't think they can screw that up. ??

Is the ahooga horn getting enough power? Is it the mechanical one or the electronic one?

I was watching that thread; I want to replace my wussy horn, too. Are the new ones loud? I mean, like, really frickin' loud?

Air horn loud? no. but 6 times louder than the stock ones. I paid 30 bucks for my a u ga horn, and I have seen authentic ones for $189 plus. I guess I just got a cheap one. My bad. Since all the wiring and switches are hooked up now, should not be a big deal to replace the cheap horn I guess. Gary

The Hella Twin Supertone Horns that Gary got are rated at 118 Decibels. The sound is very loud, and is along the lines or a high-end European car, in my opinion. The kit uses one 300Hz and one 500Hz horn.

Gary - I would make my first guess at getting enough power to the novelty horn as well.If you are, then it is probably just a cheaply made horn, or has some sort of defect.Make sure that water isn't getting in the horn and staying there (like if it were pointed up it would collect water).

if you want something that will be loud, air horns are the best. they are able to cut through the mind-fog that alot of drivers have about them. stereos, talking or drinkin' lattes, no difference. i installed a set of hella two tone air horns. installed them in front of the radiator just behind the grille. just ran the wire from the oem horn(pitched out that wimpy thing) to the compressor. i decided not to have a switch for the oem/air horns, because when you really need the airhorns, you can be fartin' around reaching for the switch. the compressor and horns all fit behind the grille. i took a piece of aluminum 1/8 or 3/16" ran it from side to side of the opening (using the convenient factory supplied holes) and mounted the compressor and horns on the aluminum. always point the horns down so that no water gets into them. you could put the compressor where the stock horns were and then just run the tubing from the stock horn location out to the front of the car. some drilling involved, but minor in that the tubing diameter is approx 3/8" i have a billet grill on my pt, but it still should not be a problem with having enough room to mount those bad boys with a factory grille. the oem and replacement grilles are curved enough that there is alot more room than it first appears. what ever choice you make, anything is better than the oem horn.

The frequencey is different, and many people think the air horns are louder, but they actually have the same Decibel rating.

I have the Wolo Aoogah - you can only punch the button - if you hold it in, it doesn't sound good - just push, let go.
Plastic horn, been great for over 2 years now.

quicksilver, I think I have the same horn. I was expecting the sound like from the original model "T". this is more of a whimpy dead sound. who knows it might sound better if I stuff a sock inside it/

Gary, remember I was looking into this as well, how much were the twin horns? How hard was the install?

Im really consirdering getting something as well. Some guy cut me off last thursday, I honked and put my brights on, after I was on the side of him I gave him the finger. He looked at me like I just all of a sudden came up on his tail of something.

No offensive to you older PT owners, atleast you all can hear, but these old people down here who can't hear, drive like they own the frikin road.

The Hella horns were around $80 and dead animal horn was $30, Triple Jack sent me the link to the German Horns (Gear head has them also) It was a breeze to put them in, I dropped the car off at Sound performance, picked the car up 4 hours later the gave the man $125. I can do it in my sleep.
