I have had the PT about 2 years and recently it has been pinging. I brought it back to the dealer and they said they haven't found anything.Last night I heard it again.when you get beside a couple of cars or beside a wall while driving. the mechanic said that he doesn't hear it and he can't fix it.Last week i brought it back and he heard it and he said that it is a common problem .Does any one know about this problem or am i getting the runaround?
Thanks, WHEELS Ps. I have changed brans of gas and it doesn't seem to make a difference. |

wheels1950, welcome to the forum. I haven't heard of this being a common problem. The PT uses a knock sensor to elliminate pinging, if yours is pinging something is wrong. Common problem or not it should be fixed!

Do a search here for "lifter" and "lash adjuster" and see if your noise fits that description.
What are the conditions when it happens? |

I light pinging or tinkle when beside a wall tells me the car has advanced the timing for maximum preformace as it should be. If however it is a loud or heavy pink or knoch sound get it fixed NOW. eddie

The ping sounds like a carburated motor when the advance is wrong!
Also after the car shifts out of first and i'm cruisen but it could happen at anytime. Sometimes I can't get it to do it.Of course that's when I"m taking the mechanic for a ride.Like I said the last time I took him for a ride he said he heard it but there was nothing coming up on the computer to tell him what to do.So he said it was the gas changed to different types but it didn't work and is getting to be a pain in the A.. Thanks WHEELS |

You can sometimes get pinging from carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. The carbon forms hot spots that cause the gas to preignite. They make several gasoline additives that clean the carbon from the combustion chamber. They only cost a few bucks and may be worth a try.

Try Chevron 93 octane for a while and see if it subsides.
