Default removing door pillars for painting

I've looked at the d/y/i page and the chiltons manual and Pt service Cd to get to the three screws behind the weatherstriping to remove the door pillar applique. You must move the weatherstriping out of the way. Has any one done this, do you just pull the weatherstriping out, roll it away from the exterior. Afraid of loosening the striping an not be able to reattach it. Any help would be appreciated.

I've done it. Just pull the weather stripping out of the way. It goes back on easily, I used a rubber mallet to ensure it was firmly back in place. Don't know if this will help any, check out this link, I took some photos while I did mine.

hehe, I went through the same thing (fear of breaking something) and why I bought the Service Manual.

After you remove the runner, you just pull out the weatherstrip; it is all one piece.

Use a magnetic driver on the screws and tuck cloths in the door to keep you from having to remove the door panel if you were to drop a screw.

What the manual did NOT say is that there are plastic shims glued to the top of the pillar that can snap off (at the glue) during pillar removal. Look out for that piece so you do not lose it.

haha, IR! Hmm...we need to work out schedule, we keep replying at the same time, lol.

hehe, I see you had the plastic shim fall off too!

Did you paint yours? I wanted to paint mine to match the glass and wondered which would be the best black for it.

Haven't painted them yet. After I took them off the weather did not cooperate, waiting for spring then I'll paint them.

BTW, super glue works great for gluing the little plastic pieces back on.
