Even at the inflated price that some places charge for changing your oil with Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter ($65) it would take over 200,000 miles to save $2,000 by going from 3,000 mile intervals to 5,000 mile intervals.
As to the question of voiding your warranty. If the manual gives an option for 5,000 mile oil changes (which it does) and your driving conditions match those listed for that Schedule your warranty is NOT voided. If your driving conditions match the 3,000 mile oil change schedule and you go 5,000 miles between oil changes you may or may not have a warranty problem depending on the dealer. EDIT: Of course you car will be out of warranty long before the 200,000 miles anyway.

I try to change mine every 3000-5000 miles and use Castrol Syntec Blend. Even at 5000 miles it still looks clean!!

Don't let it be a problem. The first oil change should have been at 3K just to get rid of any shavings or metal bits from the initial engine break-in. After that if she's doing around town driving the use the 3 times a year vs mileage. As far as the ol "especially down here" routine I can tell you first hand that that's bunk[|)]. Your system is a closed system the only contaminates that can get in are when you change or look at your oil. As far as salt air it only effects the outside of you car and only on the coast, after about 15mi. inland most damage is not caused by salt. Spent many years in Fla. as an engineer and one of the studies we did was the effect of salt on unprotected surfaces. That's how I found out about the salt, it's also why the shuttle tank is no longer painted (saved money and weight) there is no effect. Studies were done in the harshest conditions, taxi cabs in NYC, for 100K some had oil changed every 3000K, some at 5000K, some had filter changed every 5000k and oil every 20000K every machine was kept full and the engines were required to be wiped clean around the dipstick and filler area. The bottom Line No noticeable difference in engine wear. Engine wear usually comes from contaminates getting into the system ie dirt around the cap or dip stick, dirty filler spout. I've ran several cars over 100000K and never had problems with all but one. And it was known for blowing head gaskets. My oldest cruser has 78000K and has never used any oil. Change it every 5000 at the dealer and have never had anything said to me. I would suggest if you're going to keep the car add a pint of Marvel Mystery oil every oil change. It's a high grade machine oil that helps lubricate the smallest areas.
Good Luck Michael
