Default Forced air intake

[:I]Anyone know if on the standard air filter box if you can run a hose from the bottom of grill(hole next to fog lights) up to elbow at bottom of filter box. Looks to me hose would have to be flattened as it runs up fender. Might even be able to snake hose from passenger side an tee both sides together. My real question is has anyone done it and what effect do you think it could have. Any problem cooling brake pads? Airbillister sells something that mounts under grill for K&N box that he does, not sure if I want that yet. Also I live in Northeast so we get snow. This could be an inexpensive MOD if it works because it is definitely bringing in cooler air. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Gonzo,

I did exactly what you are referring to. I'll add photos when I update my Photobucket album. I used a 2" outside diameter (1 3/4 inside) ribbed pool hose. It was a royal PITA to put in and I didn't notice any real difference. I had to move it to install my HID blue headlights and fog lights (because it was covering up the entrance to the back of the lights) and haven't put the hose back in yet. Debating with myself weather it's really worth it.

Pool hose with round connector allowing air in.

Other end of pool hose with smooth round connector towards fiter.

Billister makes a air intake that is fastens below the front bumper to the air box, it has a screen opening. airbillister@comcast.net is his website. I installed it, looks good, as he matches the PT color.[8D]

Gonz,

This weekend I installed a 2 1/2 inch ID flex hose to the standard air filter box on a 2003 GT Turbo with an automatic stick. I also replaced the turbo inlet air downpipe with an aluminum tube assy made by Jim Barnes (AMX1397@aol.com). The white air inlet silencers holes were filled with silastic silicone compound. The wheel well black air inlet silencers were also filled and the tube shortened inside the box. I also have a drop in K&N filter. A 2 1/2 inch ID X 1 inch long plastic stub was installed in the bottom of the box. It is a tight fit but I added two small sheet metal angle clips with pop rivets to insure that it would stay. I removed the black plastic air deflector along side the fog light and ran the flex up and inward across the transmission housing making sure that the routing didn't interfere with the shift lever. It's a snug fit but it will work. The flex ends about 2 inches above the air box bracket. The flex hose is a snug fit over the newly added plastic stub. Just push down and install the air box. Presently the flex hose terminates in the air dam hole. I am trying to figure out how to modify the plastic air deflector so that it will route air to the air box as well as the brake area. I don't think it is necesary and I may abandon the idea. The flex hose I used is rather stiff and has is fabric reinforced with a wire inside core.

I think the best improvement was the AMX downpipe. You can sure hear the turbo scream at WOT. When I get a chance I'll try my hand at posting some photos. Hope this helps.

Ronski

I did it on my GT. Before I did it the intake hose was really hot to the touch. After I installed the hose and after running on the freeway the intake pipe was very cold to the touch. With the modified airbox (white silencer removed and silencer at bottom right cut flush to inside of the box), K&N drop in air filter and a custom turbo up pipe it is a true cold ram air intake. That's a good thing.

Another possibility is to go thru firewall at base of windshield. While this might seem to make air go "backwards", it's really a high pressure area at speed.

CREWZIN,
The real reason this didn't work so well with your intake is because your intake is designed to suck air from the surrounding area. This setup would work very well with the stock box in because the stock box creates a vacuum effect that would draw air up from that tube more iffecently.

KingKole,

Please don't take this as a personal attack...

I never said it didn't work well, I said it didn't feel any different. For all I know I was gaining 5 hp...but nobody is going to "feel" 5 hp, or 10 for that matter! You may gain .01 on the track but I'm not trying to win any races like a lot of them on this forum, but I do drive fast on the highway and the cruiser will do just that. I was clocked and stopped at 109mph. I didn't buy the cruiser for speed, I bought it for the reasons it was advertised (versatility and looks). My Vette gives me all the rush I could ever want.

I was just showing a way that it could be done when Gonzo asked about it.

CREWZIN,
Was the hemisphere on the house maroon before or after the maroon on the PT?
