Local news announced Friday night that all 2002 PT Cruisers are being recalled! Has anybody else heard this??? Why??? What are the details??? Edited to correct: ...this after the recall to correct a fire hazard.... (I think he said ...in the fuel pump.) The whole news segment was only a few seconds, and I wish I could've TIVO'd it. |

I believe this is an old recall. It had to do with adding another gasket where the fuel pump goes in the gas tank?
Not absolutely sure on this, but I do know that I had it done on my 2002 TE Cruiser. There also was a TSB about possible fuel line chafing against one of the AC lines. |

That one was a while ago. All they did is use a zip tie to hold the fuel line away from the AC line.'You could do that at home.

As reported in Saturdays Florida Today Business Section, Quote:
Government investigates PT Cruiser engine fires The government is investigating the 2002 PT Cruiser after receiving seven complaints of sudden fires in the engine. Two people have reported injuries because of the fires, including one driver who suffered head burns, the National Highway Traffic, Safety Admisistration said Friday. Six of the seven vehicles were destroyed. Daimler Chrysler AG recalled 2001 and 2002 PT Cruisers in 2002 because their fuel pumps could leak and cause a fire. Unquote. |

Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire. A secondary seal must be installed over the fuel pump module on all involved vehicles. Models IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to stop sale and complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the DIAL VIP System. Subject Repair Safety Recall No. B23 -- Fuel Pump Module Secondary Seal Page 2 Part Number Description CBWAB230 Secondary Seal Package Each package contains four foam pieces. Each dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced will receive enough Secondary Seal Packages to service about 10% of those vehicles. 1. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist. 2. Support the fuel tank with a suitable lifting device. 3. Remove the bolts from the fuel tank straps (Figure 1). NOTE: It is not necessary to drain fuel from the tank or remove the driver#146;s side fuel tank strap from behind the exhaust pipe. 4. Carefully lower the fuel tank about six inches, just enough to access the top of the fuel pump module. CAUTION: Use care to not damage the fuel line and/or wiring. 5. Clean the top of the fuel pump module and lock ring with compressed air. Wipe off the top of the fuel pump module with a clean shop towel. 6. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector. Parts Information Service Procedure Figure 1 FRONT FUEL TANK STRAP FUEL TANK Safety Recall No. B23 -- Fuel Pump Module Secondary Seal Page 3 7. Place the thin foam layer directly on top of the fuel pump module flange (Figure 2). Make sure that the appropriate sized cut-out is placed around the pump module electrical connector and fuel tube boss. Ensure that the foam lies flat on the pump module flange. NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the fuel line. 8. Connect the fuel pump module electrical connector. 9. Install the thick foam layer with cut-outs on top of the pump module and thin foam layer (Figure 3). Make sure that the cut-out is placed around the pump module electrical connector and that the slit area is above the fuel tube boss. 10. Align the outer edge of the foam with the pump module lock nut and secure it to the fuel pump module with electrical tape as shown in Figure 3. Service Procedure (Continued) Figure 2 Figure 3 Safety Recall No. B23 -- Fuel Pump Module Secondary Seal Page 4 11. Remove the protective paper from the adhesive on one of the solid thick foam layers (no cut-outs or slits). With the adhesive side facing downward, install the foam on top of the pump module and thick foam layer with cut-outs (Figure 4). 12. Remove the protective paper from the adhesive on the remaining solid thick foam layer. With the adhesive side facing downward, install the foam on top of the pump module and first solid thick foam layer (Figure 5). 13. Carefully raise the fuel tank into position. Make sure that the foam layers remain in place on top of the fuel pump module. NOTE When the tank is raised into position, the foam pieces will be compressed between the floor pan and the top of the fuel pump module. 14. Install the fuel tank strap bolts. Tighten the bolts to 250 in-lbs (23 N#8901;m). 15. Remove the fuel tank

The local news announced a "recall" on all 2002 Cruisers again this morning. I called the local dealer service dept. and they had seen the same news broadcast but had no info on a recall. The broadcast was about the federal investigation, and they should not have used the word "recall" if it wasn't one, but they did, twice!

The 2001 Cruisers had two fuel related recalls. One is the one in brnqrhd's post. The fuel could leak in a rollover.
The other one had to do with the fuel line rubbing and a hole being worn in it. Maybe some 2002s have the same problem. Don't think Chrysler made any other changes. Also they are only investigating this. No recall yet.

richard was right in 2001 they had both in 2002 they only had one. I don't care what some fluncky on the tv says if your car is recalled they will send you a notice or the next time you get your oil changed or some other work done they should run a function 14 that will tell them if you have the recall even before you get anything sent to your house. the people on the news have a tendency to blow eveything out of proportion to get the big wow effect. sorry for the rant
