Those '60's muscle cars were beautiful, weren't they? But did you ever wonder why they stopped making them all of the sudden around 1973? It wasn't just the price of gas, or even the new exhaust emissions requirements.

One of the main reasons Detroit stopped making "Street Racing Cars" was intense pressure from Government and other gruops who were protesting the high number of teenage deaths from street racing accidents.

You were lucky, alot of other people didn't "got over it".

Drive safely, or not at all.

Let BBC have his fun. He just wanted to say that he had a good experience beating a rice burner. I think dumping on a rice burner in a PT is something to talk about. A 3,100 PT compared to a 22-2,500 pound import.

BBC will learn just give him time. Until he learns you shouldn't make him fell worthless to us as a member. If I had gotten this same response to another topic, not about racing, I wouldn't be around anymore.

I think alot of the things people do on here, in or to, thier PT's may be dumb and not of my liking but I still support them or tell them I like it, because thats the satisfaction they want. It may look good on there cruiser as far as a mod but wouldn't look good on mine, its thier taste.

I think the doing a mod is something quite a bit different than endangering other peoples lives. If he is as good a racer as he thinks he is go out on the track and prove it.

Yes most of us old farts raced but just speaking for myself NEVER did it on an open highway. Drag raced on a back road with no cross streets so the only people we put at risk were me and who I was racing.
Wasn't happy doing that build a 40 Ford coupe and ran at the strip. Even got beat by a lady. Some of us old folks will remember her as she is pretty famous in drag racing circles Shirley Cha Cha Muldowney

The post was for those who actually find "that kind of driving" a rush and fun. I understand people not liking or going with it. Yes, I am 20, glad to see someone can count, but I have been racing and defensive/offensive driving and have taking classes for it since i was 16. If you can read I said Unskilled. So, if a post is not what you like/participate in, dont post.
What are you trying to prove? I could give a rats ass if the three of you wipe out and wreck your cars, but what of the other innocent people around you? The people minding their own business, driving to work, school, Moms with babies in the car, what about their safety? I rarely post here, but this is assinine. [V]

Go to a track or closed road.

Sure, I remember Shirley. There was even a movie about her - "Heart Like a Wheel" or something like that. As I recall, she had to come back from a really nasty accident!

On June 29th, 1984 tragedy struck during qualifying at an NHRA event in Montreal, Canada. A front tire failure on her nitro fueled dragster caused a high speed crash at over 250 mph that nearly ended her life. In addition to other injuries, her legs were so badly broken they required extensive and repeated surgeries simply to enable her to walk again. For many months of grueling physical therapy and recovery, not to mention moral support from close friends and fans, Muldowney was strapping herself back into a race car.

Muldowney was out of racing for almost two years, but returned to win races, and in 1998 she set a speed record for the International Hot Rod Association. She is considered one of the greatest drivers in drag racing history.

Blade, I can identify, got out of the Navy in 65 and bought a brand new Pontiac Lemans, 326, 4 barrel, 4 speed. Raced every thing in sight, not as much traffic in those days. Fortunately I didn't roll anything, I just got married and had kids so I had to get rid of the hot rod and get into station wagons.

zzzhuh--another reason that the muscle car died out was that the insurance companies started raising their rates so high, owning a muscle car got to be way too expensive. emissions(cutting the heck out of the hp ratings), gas crisis (anybody want to push a b or c body chrysler to the gas pump?), gov't pressure and insurance(show me the money) all of those factors played in to the death of the muscle car. of this dilemna, there was no way out. gave up on my 70 GTX (replaced in 76 with a 61 vette) looking for another GTX. (love those big block mopars) woof.

This post was intended for those who are into street racing. Everybody knows the dangers of it. Everybody knows the dangers in Nascar racing, football, hockey, drag racing too. But, you dont here everybody saying all of the bad for that. So, if you are just going to post what bad you have heard/seen from it, dont bother, I wasnt looking for anybody to reply and especially about stuff we already knew.
Blueblur,
PLEASE don't take this as a flame, because its not, but my wife and two daughters are not in a NASCAR race football game ect so they are not exposed to those dangers, but to street racers, drunk drivers, muggers, ticks, and boogie man they are exposed. This is why I don't like any of those things, and a bunch of others.
Just please look at all the worst case scenerios, and reconsider street racing. I am allmost twice your age and have seen many things I wish I had not seen. One of the worst was calling on a CB for fifteen minutes for a cop to pull over a drunk, only to watch the guy hit a girl whose car had a flat on the side of 695 here in MD. Some how the girl survived, miracles do happen, but to have her father call me the next day to ask what happened is one of the low lights of my life, but to hear a few weeks later she was ok made it better. If you ever are unlucky enough to watch what you believe is a completely innocent person killed being thrown across and landing in the middle of a highway, it is something that is still VERY vivid in my mind today, about 18 years later.
Now I did used to run a sand drag Jeep, 700+ hp, and I used to accept all risked involved in that, but I would never take my 3 1/2 year old or 1 week old in that car on the track. Things happen that are out of your controll every day, but compound that while racing and it gets much worse much quicker. A couple of years ago there was someone killed up my way by a car racing and going out of controll crossing the median strip going airborn and hitting another, the person killed was not racing.
I am all for going to the strip and letting it all hang out, [8)][?]hopefully the only injuries will be on the track, and medical help is on scene, but please keep it off the street, for Maggys and Jessikas sake.
Thanks,
Tom
