u wont belive how much mpg i got . I only tried it with the first quarter of the tank . I went to visit some friends that lives about 150 - 170 kms away. so i filled the tank full and went on .
I reached there and i saw that i travled 162 KMS with only the first quarted of the tank. quarter tank means 2.500 Gallons. I was traveling between 115 and 120 kmh
so 162 / 1.6 = 101.25 miles , 101.25 / 2.5 gal = 40 mpg

Which is Pretty good

Junkno,

Rest assured that you really aren't getting 40 MPG. The fuel gauge is not an accurate way to calculate fuel mileage. It is not linear. The only time it is really accurate is when you have a full tank and when you are dead empty. All other times it is relative.

The only accurate way to calculate mileage is to record the miles traveled for a full fillup. Divide the miles by gallons and there is your true mileage for that tank. After many tanks you will get a true "average" MPG figure.

Trouble is the gas gauge is not linear. That first quarter includes the extra space at the top of the tank, above float travel. Exactly how much past 'indicated full' you get depends on when the gas pump nozzle shuts off, which varies between pumps. (It is unsafe and wasteful to keep pumping to 'top it off').

I'm getting about 26mpg avg highway (cruising 70-80mph, hilly terrain) measured by multi-tankful logging.

I expect to get at least 100 miles from the first 'quarter' of the tank, if it doesn't happen it is either due to an underfilled tank (caused by an oversensitive pump nozzle) or urban traffic (too much time spent stopped in traffic getting 0 mpg).

(Gas Milage Mods: 5 speed, K&N FIPK, Borla header and custom exhaust for easy breathing, high quality tire gauge and properly inflated tires)

I just bought a 2002 PT Cruiser LE. From empty I got about ll gallons in that tank and drove about 260 till almost empty. Does this sound right? I thought the cruizer has a 15 gallon tank. Anybody have a 2002 PT Cruiser LE and know how big thier tank is. I would look at the manual but don't have it with me. Looked online and it says that it should be a 15 gallon. Any help would be cool

Hey Crewzin,
Actually, I don't have an accurate mileage. I was under the impression that you had to 'break a car in' before figuring out the mileage. My car has almost enough miles to make the 2nd oil change, should make that amount this weekend. Anyway, am I right about this?
p.s. I'm not really all that old, but I've had a fun time with this thread.

Just finished one of several trips lately. Have new '04 Touring Turbo (4300 miles, 5 weeks old now). This was the first time I got the '1/8' tank light and single chime. I had 30 miles to go, so I stopped for gas. Filled up, with extra squeeze, just to make sure. Only took 12.1 gallons. I could have made it home with gas to spare. Don't believe everything the fuel gage tells you. The trip length to that point was 284 miles, 23.4 mpg. I just added a 'Auto-Meter' boost gage (same as used in Neon SRT-4). It's easy to see what's effecting my mileage now.
