Default liftgate

My 2004 liftgate opens on it's own once I unlock it and get it started.
Manuel says that in cold weather it might not open fully, something about gas in the supports, so I might have to help it along.
I told my kids NOT to force it open, especially when they are in a hurry and want to get their gear out of the trunk...
Just wondering if anyone has had any difficulties with this and how cold is cold?
Thank you

After opening about 6-12", my tailgate rises on its own. If well below freezing, it needs more help. Having owned several minivans, sooner or later (4-5 years) the struts will no longer hold the gate open - they aren't that expensive or hard to replace.
