Officially "PT" stands for "Personal Transportation".
PT Cruiser was based on the Chrysler PT platform (Platform Tall).
"PT" was also the production code for the PT Cruiser.

Unofficially, the name may stand for "Plymouth Truck". The original concept car was a Plymouth. Chrysler adopted the production car when the Plymouth brand was discontinued.

Feel free to ask any questions in this community. there are no dumb questions because someone in the world is probably asking the same question as you. If anyone knows, we will try to answer them and direct you to informative channel. Asking questions benefits those who dont dare to ask

For example this question "What does PT stands for?" or "What is the meaning of PT?",

i have received over 20 emails from different individuals asking me what it stands for.
Some are new 1st time PT owners, some are curious visitors owning other car make.
In Chrysler official site, there is no definition. So for those who are new to PT tends to ask this question.

Based on a certain poster's response I would have guessed "Particularly Testy"

Actually I'm glad calflan asked because I hadn't realized that I didn't know this until calflan asked and probably would have never thought to search on it.

We should all do a lot more questioning so we can get beyond forming opinions based solely on what we just see and are told.

When non-PT people ask, I usually laugh and tell them it stands for 'Particularly Terrific'!

Seriously though, when I got mine, I asked the dealer: he said it stands for Personal Transportation. The part I love is the vehicle definition: I called Chrysler after my city classified it as a sedan, the state says its a light truck, and my insurance agent chose sub-compact. Chrysler's answer? NOT classified on purpose: all things to all people, I guess!

That would be me

As for classifications:
The EPA says anything with a fold-flat load floor is a truck (so that means a 66 'cuda would be a 'truck'?). But that only applies to gas mileage classification for meeting CAFE regulations.

New York state DMV says my PT is a '4 Dr Sdn'

Auto mags have been calling it a 'Tall Wagon'

Chrysler mostly has called it a Cash Cow.
