Default checking cooling fan

Hi first timer. I have a 2001 non turbo that I know the fan is bad. What I need to know is when checking it out if you supply power to either side of the 3 prong plug if the motor should run. I went out to a wrecking yard and got one put could only get the motor to run on the high speed side. thanks again
