Default Re: gas mileage

I just did my second milege check on my 2006 with 8k on it. This was mostly non hiway country driving in hilly Vermont. I got 28.91 mpg which I was happy with. Last year I took a trip to Maine on 2 lane roads and got a hair under 31 mpg. I have no mods to the car. I'll admit that I drive like an old man but I'm always a little over the limit. I'm surprised at all the low numbers that people are reporting.

the low mileage that people are stating sound like there driving in the city

my low gas mileage is due to high altitude(5500-5600ft)
and the DA for our area is usually around (7800-8500ft)

people up here add about a full second to there 1/4 mi time.

if you make the engine breath better it will get better mileage

mods would be
CAI or SRI
low restrictive exhaust,
180 t-stat (these engines run better cooler)
properly inflated tires,
good plugs and wires
port intake man and throttle body
and zero boost leaks

Here we go again. Magic mpg enhancers. Unless you change the parameters in the pcm programming none of that stuff is going to work. That's why with a program like SCT XCAL you can get a better mpg tune because parameters were actually changed. Throwing a bunch of bolt ons for better mpg is useless because of pcm control.

I usually run 22-24 mpg with a combo of city, country highway and freeway. That's getting on it every once in awhile. I can get 30+ if I totally stay out of boost. It's a proper tune, proper tire inflation and your foot that determines where your mpg goes. mpg seems to vary a lot with PT owners with automatics sucking the worse. I find it funny when people buy a PT and immediately want to enhance the mpg beyond manufacturers numbers. There is no easy bolt on remedy. If that was the case the manufacturer would be doing it in order to get better mpg numbers. If people are that anal about mpg then they should have bought a Honda.

I agree with MG, there are so many variables. Here is my gas chart for the past year since I bought my car brand new. As you can see the mileage is very up and down. I know when those fillups were highway driving and city driving or both. I guess the one thing that should be remembered is my car isn't even broken in yet and is a NA automatic.

Twice I got over 40mpg (imp) and that was basically driving at 110km or 65mph.

When I use this, I have numerous formulas in it so I only have to fill in the gas price, gas amount and the odometer reading at the fill up and all of the data fields automatically fill in themselves.

Also shows how much more Canadians pay for gas....lol.

Regards
Terry

Nice chart -- Yes, Those MPG looks like mine. And yes, since I switched to Synthetic oil, put a K&N filter, plugs and wires, I have been getting better MPG.

I drive a lot of city and highway driving. I can get anywhere from 17.9 to 21.9 (which is the highest mpg that I have gotten out of a tank of gas -- which that was mostly Highway driving -- average speed is 60 to 80 MPH -- )
