Default key copy, do I have to go to a dealer?

went to Lowes and got a copy made but it will allow my 2001 PT entry but engine will start momentarily but dies. I am sure it is a safety feature to stop the car hijacking.

I actually have a blank from the dealer but needs to be cut properly, do I have to go to a lock smith or a dealer?

thanks,

gychang

If the key can start the car, it should keep running... As far as I know, the '01 PTs use a plain old key, so if you get a copy made it should work. Does it start right with your normal key?

I could be wrong but I think the ignition key has some sort of theft deterrent system built into the thick part of the key which will cut the engine after a few seconds if it's not coded correctly.

Here's a write up for my 2001 PT ....

*“QUICK - ORDER PKG - inc: assist handles, cargo net, deep tint glass, rear seat outboard head restraints, remote keyless entry, light group, pwr central locking system, pwr / heated fold - away mirrors, fold - flat front passenger seat, alarm system, sentry - key theft deterrent system GROSS”

This is correct...I say go to the dealer and get it coded or a new one cut.

I think if I'm correct you can buy the blank from the dealer, get it cut elsewhere and then you need the dealer to program it to your car. I have a 2001 PT. It does have a built in immobilizer on the key. If you do everything through the dealer I think it's in the area of $50-75.

Mine can start with a plain old metal key though... No rubber thing.

If you have two keys that already work (already programmed) you can make a third key yourself. If not you are at the dealer's mercy to get the extra key programmed.
