Default Air Bag Light

Hello...first post...interesting site. My air bag light is on, the horn does not work and the cruise control does not work. Looking through previous posts it seems that the clock spring is causing this. I recently had a second hand steering column fitted (as Chrysler wanted 1000) as a small part on the column happened to be corroded...could not buy that part, had to buy the whole column. Can anyone tell me what a clock spring is...what it looks like and can I buy one? or do I just roll on without it all working. I love my PT (its a 2000 PT Limited) and would early love it to be right..and my wallet would like to avoid the dealer!

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully someone will come along with more knowledge of the clockspring workings than I have. I can give you a couple pictures to help you out that way.

I can tell you that the book says you have to disable the airbag before doing anything. Figure 16.3 tells you how.

Then the airbag comes out and you should be able to see the clockspring mounting details, Figure 16.8

what happened is that the column was not correctly centered before installation, causing you to snap the ribbon in the clock spring when you turned a corner. you should have gently turned the wheel all the way one way till you felt slight resistance, then turned it the other way and counted the revolutions till you feel resistance again. divide that number by two, turn the wheel that many turns and locked it in that position. this way the clock spring is centered. new clock springs come locked in the center position from the factory. when replacing, center the steering wheel and wheels, then lock in that position. remove neg. battery terminal and wait for 10 minutes. remove airbag and steering wheel. then you can access the clock spring. remove the old one, install the new one, then remove the locking tab that holds the new clockspring centered. install the steering wheel then airbag. reconnect battery. take to someone with a airbag scan tool to have codes cleared and check for proper operation. pretty straight forward operation.

Does it happen when you first start the car only, or is it happening while you drive?

Usually when you start the car, it'll chime a few times with all the engine lights on....I think the Chime # was 7?? I forgot, but those lights ARE supposed to go on for a test when you start the car.

see if you can convince someone with a air bag scanner to ride along on a test drive with you while the scanner is hooked up. when it starts chiming, they can scan it to see whats going on. they still might find a past code stored in the module. usually if the light stays on, it means that the air bag module's self test has determined that some part has malfunctioned.
