Default K&N

Hi I am still looking for K+N airbox for my GT. I understand there is K&N metal pipe which gives 12-13hp gain at 5000rpm and typhoon system for 11hp gain at 4500 rpm...plastic pipe...and is cheaper.......I want to pick one up in SanDiego...who is best to deal with and best prices?and which system should I buy?

Phil,

Hate to break it to you, but your gain will be nowhere near what the manufactures claim on the air filter. You may see 2-5hp at tops if you had a dyno. You'll never notice the difference yourself except for an increase in noise level when your foot is to the floor. That increase in noise is due to the rushing in of air thru the inlet tube on it's way to the throttle body.

Thats what a fellow and other people on PTcrew told me....one fellow told me the K+N open cone airbox filter is a waste of money. Some have also noted a drop in HP. I have been advised to buy a 3" diameter pipe and get rid of my 1.5" diameter intake pipe from the turbo to the intake box that a fellow named Jim makes and replace the drop in filter with a K&N. He sells them for 155$ shipped and claims a 6hp gain. Not sure what to do...maybe I'll just say the hell with it maybe my car is fast enuf for daily street use. Maybe I'll just treat myself to a movie and treats tonite.I already got a 200$ ticket last summer......and maybe close to 200$ for the pipe and filter is just not worth it. Maybe I should just be happy with 215HP. Save my money for a future car with more HP like a 2008 vette one day with 430 hP. I'll probably need money for future tickets with my future car.

A lot of "maybe's" but maybe your right.

Use a drop-in K&N, a little bigger elbow pipe to draw in more air from the fender and get rid of the white donuts in the air boxes. That's the best you can do.

Jim and I had several conversations about his claimed 6 hp gain from a 18" pipe. I just don't see how a little pipe can add 6 hp. We also argued about his claim of more mpg. I wish it was that easy. The pipe he does make is of nice quality and worth getting. You could make your own, like I did, for about 1/2 that price. With the silencer removed you really hear the whine of the turbo and the sound of the stock surge valve or bov.

I have been told that the engine and emission system wants cool air to function correctly. Using devices like the K&N even tough they really look cool are actually not that good for the engine in the long run and may in fact make it less reliable as they are sucking warm air that is in the engine compartment. I am not an expert by any means on this subject, but I am on a ton of car forum and the consensuses of most including factory mechanics agree with this assumption. I am considering getting some dress up stuff for the engine and may get one anyway.

I've been told using this pipe which is 3" instead of the stock 1.5" pipe and using a drop in K&N filter and my stock airbox bringing in cold air from the fender not hot air from the engine is best for the turbo
