![]() The dealer called and said the car was done and that they couldn't find a leak. I asked them where the oil came from then, and they said they didn't see any oil, but just a little residue from the oil pressure sending unit being replaced... 2,600 miles ago. So here's what I get from the deal: dealer 1 says the oil pressure sending unit is leaking; it is noticed during an oil change. sending unit is replaced. (Note: very little, if any, oil is lost when replacing a sending unit.) They clean the area where the oil leaked the best they could. I bring the car home and pull it up on some ramps to inspect the work and learn a little bit about the underside of PT. The block has just a trace of oil, but none dripping from anywhere. It is basically clean. The car gets about 2,600 miles added to the odometer. During this 2,600 miles I notice oil spots on my rear bumper from the wind blowing oil on it as I drive on the highway. I bring it in to dealer 1 for an oil change and to look for a leak. They say it's a head gasket and allow me into the shop to walk under the car and check it out. Oil is dripping from the engine and transmission onto the floor. The rear axle has a lot of oil on it that was not there 2,600 miles ago. The car gets 82 more miles on it. The car gets dropped off at dealer 2 for the work to be done. They claim they see no oil and say that any oil I saw was residue from the sending unit being replaced. How can oil leak for a few thousand miles, drip off of the engine, and then just stop and autocleanse the block within 82 miles? The guy said they cleaned the engine and transmission of all oil. The oil has dye in it now, so they can find a leak, if it has one, with a black light at the next oil change. Any oil drips at all will indicate a leak since they said the engine is 100% clean now. We'll see... . |

Pressure/temperature sending units are know for strange and early failures.

At this time did you checks the oil level -yourself- to see how much oil was lost during this time. I wounder if the lube tech might have split some oil on the engine during the original oil change and it got blown over everything. You are not experiencing any runability issues--??--clean the engine-top and bottom and the under carriage with a degreasser. Check and record the level of oil. Check it weekly during this oil change period and lets see if you have a leak or some sloppy lube work. One drop of oil where it is needed covers nothing--one drop what it is not wanted covers the world. Just my experience. Last edited by BLUEH20; 24 Jan 2009 at 11:39 am. Just a quick update... the car is back in the shop now for a new head gasket. The bottom of the car is coated with oil, hopefully they clean it up a bit too.
They first tried to re-torque the head, but it was within specs, so they're going to replace the head gasket. |
