Unhappy 2004 PT Cruiser doors will not unlock

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser and the four doors (the hatch will open) have locked and I am unable to pull the door locks up to unlock them. I have tried to change the position of the child saftey lock on my dash but that did not help. I don't have a keyless entry remote and would like to know if anyone can advise me as to how I can get the doors unlocked?

Welcome to the forum, Karen, the lock that you are calling a child safety lock only turns the power off & on to the rear windows, and it is a window switch only. The only locks are the pins at the rear of the doors. If you do not have power locks you should be able to unlock the drivers door with the key.

Welcome.
You don't have remote locking, but do you have central locking? Is there a rocker switch on the driver's door?
Also, there ARE child locks - when you open the rear doors, on the back part of the door there is a flip switch that if up, will prevent the door from being opened from the inside - but they should still open from the outside.

Question Re: 2004 PT Cruiser doors will not unlock

Thanks for the information Hooligan and quicksilverdon,

I'm now able to unlock the driver's door by turning the key hard (before I was unable to open it even when trying to turn the key). I'm unable to open up the back passenger doors and am only able to open the front passenger door when I have the window down and pull up on the door lock while turning the key in the door at the same time.

Before I started having this problem, I was able to use the key in the driver's door and all of the locks would unlock at the same time. Now it is just the driver's door that will unlock.

I was unable to see a rocker switch on the driver's door.

Do you have any more ideas that might help me?

Thanks.

I tried a search for your problem and there doesn't seem to be an exact match but there was talk about an electrical switch inside the front drivers door that can go bad and cause problems.

Karen:
I believe the rocker switch QSD is talking about is where the front door pull handle is. It will lock and unlock all of the doors, there is also one on the passenger door. If, as you say all of the doors will unlock with the key in the front door you have power door locks. When you bought the car did you get a key fob with it? Maybe the problem is the door switch that Crewzin suggested.

You don't say where you are - could it be freeze-up? Shoot some lock lubricant in the locks.

Cool Re: 2004 PT Cruiser doors will not unlock

Hello again, Sorry about the delay in responding, but I was without a computer for a few days but now I have it back.

Do you think the switch in the driver's door could solve the problem with all of the other doors? I'm unable to open the back two passenger doors at all and am unable to open the front passenger door unless I pull up on the door lock while turning the key in that door. I hate to drive the car because of the safety issue but I do it out of necessity.

I live in Iowa and the door locks should not be frozen since we are have above freezing temperatures lately and still no luck.

I would appreciate any help that I can get.

Karen,

After reading all the threads again since the start, it seems like you have the electric door locks and possibly when you bought the PT they didn't give you the key fob so you've been using the key which overrides the RKEM (Remote Keyless Entry Module). That particular part might have gone bad now and I think it's time for you to get professional help.
I'm not sure how much the RKEM is or what the labor would be to install a new one, but we are all just guessing now and it needs more of a hands-on approach.
