I have a opportunity to buy a new 2007 PT (never sold) that came
without a air conditioner in it and I was wondering if anybody has heard of or experienced having a after market air unit or a factory unit installed in a PT? The price is pretty good and it is a 5 speed which I prefer because of better mileage. I live in the southwest where over 100 degree days is very normal so air is a necessity. I know there are plenty of nice late model PT's with automatic available but the few I have tried out seem very slow on acceleration and from what I have read get less gas mileage so I am leaning towards the 5 speed if possible. I did try out a turbo automatic and it was plenty fast but I'm sure all that speed comes with a sacrifice on gas. Thanks for any input. |

Welcome to the forum. I'll let one of the mechanics on the forum hopefully come along and answer your question about adding air. I can hardly imagine what all is involved in adding all the components that are needed and I'm not sure how the computer would react. It relies on inputs from sensors to adjust idle speed and fan operation so I'm not sure if they have to added also in fact I wouldn't be surprised if a new computer would have to be added. Just guessing.

I completely agree about whether I can come out on it or not but the
dealer just called and lowered the price of the 2007 (new and never sold) $1000 so now I have a little incentive to really start looking for a dealer that can do the job if it isn't way to high on price. They are down to under $10,000 which is pretty good I would think even for a 2007 but it never sold so they are telling me that it will sell as a new vehicle. I talked to one service manager who is at a Tucson dealer and he said he will make some calls on Monday and Tuesday and see if he can find the appropriate kit to do the job. Hopefully he will be able to find one and if the total price is good I'll do it. Thanks for all the input. It's all very useful. |

Talk to the same dealer about adding the air for you, see what they say.

I did ask the sales manager and he said they could do it for $3100 or so
but he didn't seem to excited to do it. I think they just want to move this vehicle since it's been in their inventory for such a long time plus this is a smaller dealership so I might have some reservations about the quality or knowledge compared to a larger dealership in a larger city. It may prove to be a monster of a problem but the guy in Tucson said it could easily be done by buying individual parts but it would be to expensive so I guess it depends if any of them can come up with a kit. If not I'll be back talking to other dealerships for a different deal. |

I probably should try out one of the newer PT's with the 180 hp turbo
engine but I think the gas mileage is rated about the same as the basic 150 HP engine on fuel economy.com which if I remember correctly is about 24 on the highway. I live in a small town so in town mileage isn't a big factor for me. Of course I have found that the ratings for fuel economy.com are a little on the conservative side so maybe the 180 hp turbo with automatic trans. might get 26 or more on the interstate. |

The 180hp PT is a Turbo but de-tuned to run on regular fuel instead of premium. The extra 30hp will give you a little extra and if you drive conservatively you can the best of both worlds.
