Default high brake light not working

Hello, I have a 2001 pt. The other day I noticed that the high brake light was not working. I changed all 3 bulbs and it was still not working. Both the left and right brake lights work and all of the fuses checked out ok. Any ideas? Thanks

The wiring harness from the point that it attaches to the standard brake lights has suffer an open circuit. Look missing ground and/or power.

After checking for the presence or not of the items discussed above, look for a break in the cabling at the flex point of the harness on the lift gate to door frame.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks Blue, I checked everything out and it seems ok. I changed the brake switch (behind the brake pedal) about a year ago because it was stuck on. Everything was working then. Is it likely that the switch is bad? Thanks

Nope--it ain't the switch.

Electrically, the CYCLOPS (center mounted brake light) is just a third brake light. If the port and starboard are working fine and the bulbs are good in the CYCLOPS--it has to be in the harness wiring.

There is a splice in the main brake harness running down the port side of the vehicle. The harness runs from there to the CYCLOPS lamp assembly--it does take a bit of flexing when the tail gate is lifted and closed--that is where I would look for a broken wire--hot or ground--either could cause your problem.
