Default advice on "noise" on bumpy roads...

This may be a stupid question but I thought I would start here with the experts before going to a shop. I have 2001 LTD automatic with 61K miles. It has been a great vehicle - no major problems. When I drive over "bumpy" roads I hear/feel the bumps (as in "klunk") but they seem to me more like the vehicle than just the bumps in the road. I know the suspension on the Cruisers are considered "tight" but this just doesn't "feel right" to me.

It may just be me but it seems as if it's gotten worse over the last year or so -- especially if it's really cold.

I'm not sure where to start checking for wear? The shocks seem OK. What should I be looking at? Your thoughts? TIA
