Hi I am a new member, hoping to pick someone's brain about my charging problem.
Here is the history - I have a 2001 Pt Cruiser 2.4 L (Canadian) I got a beep a couple times while driving never noticed any lights, then started the car one time and started driving would shift out of first gear pulled over shut car off went to restart wouldn't start - boosted and took off assumed the battery was bad. Had to boost 3 times to get it home as it kept stalling the dash went totally dead during this so I assumed then it was the alternator. Because the battery appeared to be original I changed that and proceeded to remove the alternator (what a hassle) took the alternator to a rebuilder I use for work and found out the alternator was fine, so figured for 200.00 bucks I'd put a new one in I checked the codes and got the alternator field code which was in the computer so went on ebay and got a computer from a pwer seller and had him code it to my VIN # put it in and still not charging and now the alternator light on the dash is on checked the wires for the field from the alternator the DGwire to #8 computer port has continuity so it is ok the DG/OR wire that the schematic that goes to the ASD then on to the computer as RD/WT to prot # 46 on the computer doesn't seem to have continuity at the ASD pin or at the computer port. I am assuming that this is where my problem lies but I would like some feed back just in case I'm out to lunch. an electrician I am not.the car runs but the alterator light is on and I am only getting just over 12 volts across the battery, oh the large wire (BK/Gy) from the starter to the alternator checks out ok as well 12volts with key on but only 12 volts when engine is running as well. Sorry this is so long winded but I figure the more details the better |

Had the same thing just happen to my Corvette. The Vette has a regulator built inside the alternator. I assume the PT is the same. By a procedure with a ground wire I found out alternator was good but the regulator needed replacing/rebuilding but instead I went with a re-built alternator/w regulator. Runs fine now at 14+ when I first start it and down to 12V when charged up. Did your place that you use test the regulator?

We have a 2002 BE PT with 93k miles. I would like to know where the voltage regulator is located on the PT? Thank you for your help. - Gene, from Iowa. The Electronic Voltage Regulator (EVR) is not a separate component. It is actually a voltage regulating circuit located within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The EVR is not serviced separately. If replacement is necessary, the PCM must be replaced.
