I drive 2 days a week "city" driving, and 2 days "highway" driving, and I average 28mpg. I typically do the speed limits (maybe a little above, but not excessive.) Today I got gas after a whole week of highway driving and get 31mpg. I only have to fillup once a week, which is nice! I think the gas mileage on the PT is pretty decent.

I agree, there is a market for basic transportion. The average guy or girl probably could care less what theyre driving. What it looks like or how it performs is immaterial to someone who buys a car the same way they would buy any other appliance, since thats what a car really is to them. But that doesnt make a corolla or camry a 'great car'. Its a means to an end, and while it does its job well thats all it is or will ever be.

But there are american cars that are at least the equal of anything Japanese. Again I hate GM. However, there's no denying that the Chevy Cobalt coupe is a hell of a good value. The high mpg version gets 36 mpg on the highway. The SS version will dust a Civic Si and its a damn sharp looking little car. If only theyd offer awd and a 4 wheel independent suspension it would be easily the equal of the EVO or Sti and it at least offers a coupe bodystyle, which is a MUST for any performance car to have. Lets not forget that the basic, crappiest version of the new camaro has a V-6 which is pushing 300 hp and gets 27 hwy mpg. Yeah, its not as high as any japanese car, but it'll run rings around them and offers rwd and muscle car style. Its a REAL car, something you'd be proud to own. Paying a little more for the car, and giving up a few MPG for that is a done deal in my book.

'03 PT Cruiser GT 5spd: removed muffler and airbox silencer future planned mods are K&N typhoon intake, 2" rear lowering springs, hopefully some kind of old skool mag style wheels, and possibly at least a stage 1 turbo upgrade. Oh and i GOTTA get rid of those $#@!'in flame decals!

I cant deny much in there. Very good post. While the Cobalt IS a decent little car that gets good mileage and will last just as long as any honda, if it's not an SS they are GENERALLY ugly and tasteless. And really 36mpg highway isn't great for a tiny, gutless, un-nice car. Like I said, my run of the mill civic gets that in the city.

Yes, an SS would dust the Si. While I will vouch for japanese "sporty" feel and gas mileage, if you want Performance your stuck with either Ford or Chevy. The japs dont know how to make a fast car, or even a quick car that gets good mileage.

GM has been hitting the nail on the head in the performance/dollar+economy ratio since the late 80's, and has withheld the market ever since. GM has got it going on w/ their performance cars.

We bought a 2004 turbo lite this summer. I started keeping track of all gas I put into my cars back when you could deduct gas tax on your income tax. We have put about 5000 miles on it since purchase. I calculated our MGP last week and it came to 21.9 MPG. I would say that about 40% of that was on trips of about 100 miles and the rest more local.

Granted, this will probably change, which is why I signed up at Fuelly to track it, but, so far:

I drive 75-100 city miles per day, 5 days a week, during traffic.
I live in the desert so the A/C is almost always on.
I refuel every night.
I don't gun the engine and I try VERY hard not to have to stop suddenly or pull out in front of Semi's trying to smear me all over the road. (i.e. gentle stops and starts)
It's an automatic.

So far, around 22 is what I'm averaging.

I do a mix of Interstate and city driving, Florida is warm so a/c is on, fill up once a week or so. Went to Myrtle Beach a couple of weeks ago so the average mileage increased. I also check with pencil and paper at each fillup. Good luck with your PT.
