Weel my baby has gone to the garage to find out exactly whats wrong with her and how much its gonna cost to get her sorted, My uncle collected her nearly three hours ago and i still havent heard anything........ Fingers crossed.

Hi well she came back last night thay cant find whats wrong with her, they put her on the computer to get a full read out of the problem, thay then checked all the areas that came up on pc and everything looked ok so the codes have been wipped of the memory, an they have said to see how she goes and if the problem comes back thay will have the auto electrics guy have a look at the computer thing as they think it might be an electrical fault with everything else looking ok.
Dont know of this makes any sense to you guys. Oh and they didnt charge me a penny for looking at it either which is a bonus.

They're getting on your good side so they can slap you with an enormous bill later. The computer does have a lot to do with how almost everything works thruout the PT. Lets hope you don't need a new one but the way a lot of shops work nowadays, they just throw parts at a problem in hopes of curing it. You can tell that by the way owners come here and tell us that the shop replaced this and that at a cost of $$$$ and they still have the same problem.

I just found this searching for help in another thread. This highlights what i just said......

I have a 2001 pt cruiser and it died the other day. It backfired, the check eng. light came on and it shut down. Mech said it was the cam sensor and the crank sensor. They replaced them for $520.00 but now say that the sensors caused the plugs and wires to be damaged and want more money(300.00) plus, and now say the battery is bad and need an additional (160)plus. Can you help me and tell me if I am being scamed. I have been told that I am.

Oh dear thats not good, thanks for making me aware. Hopefully it wont be the case as its my uncles garage. He actually told me pretty much what you said about some people will try and land a huge bill on me when it could be something and nothing. We are going to take her on a good run at the weekend and see how she does.
Its good to know that everyone watches out for everyone else on here especially when i know nothing about cars.

If it's your uncles place you may be ok but as others have said beware.

On my old '94 Camaro I was having issues once... it was running rough with power loss, etc... and I was told by a local garage that it was a blown head gasket and given a quote for over $2000.

Upon further review at another mechanic it was vacuum leaks and some other minor things that ended up costing around $250.

Head gasket was fine.

if the ecm is bad, it's covered under the 8/80 emissions warranty.

I took it to my local garage and told them the problem and they said it was probably the emission and want £45 to put it on the computer before anything was done. So that when i asked my uncle to have a look at. Luckily (i think) He has a friend who worked for the main dealer of the cruisers who is now self employed, so if it turns out in a couple of week that its something major he will be looking at it.....
