Unhappy 2006 - Replaced Fan - Comperssor Not Working

Ok guys (gals) try to follow this one:

1 – Fan stopped working about 6 weeks ago. Not overheating but like others A/C would blow warm during stops and engine would idle rough.

2- Was quoted $772 from dealer to replace the fan! Ordered the complete fan assembly for $99 online and was waiting on deliver to replace.

3- While waiting to install the fan, which I delayed an extra week, the A/C was working fine while driving the vehicle. During stops I would turn off the A/C. About 3 days before I replaced the fan I “punched” the accelerator to pass another vehicle while the A/C was still running (usually I would turn off the A/C before passing someone). Immediately after making the pass my cold air started blowing hot and never blew cold again.

4-I replaced the fan assembly in about 2 hours and the fan works fine. Still no cold air though. The compressor would not come on.

5- Brought the car to a friend that owns a body shop with an “A/C machine” to test my system. They told me there was a charge in the A/C system but they empty and refilled the system anyway and everything was working fine.

6- I drove the car for about 30 miles (drive home) at first the air was ice cold, by the time I arrived home it was blowing warm again.

7-Brought the car to a local A/C and radiator place. He told me the system was charged and no leaks but compressor would not turn on. They said that when power applied to the compressor it would turn on and blows cold however after running for a while it would shut off and not come back on. He told me to take it to the dealer, maybe a computer issue.

Thanks it folks. My fan works, my A/C system is charged. Compressor won’t come on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

There's two switches you might want to check out before blaming the computer. The High Pressure Cut-out switch located on the compressor and the Pressure cycling switch located on the accumulator can both cause the compressor to malfunction. The local A/C place should know how to test them.

I dont know a whole lot about these cars yet,but is there a temp switch on the exaporator or no.If so,it could be reading wrong and shutting the system off.Not to compare cars, but my Z-28 i just sold had the same problem with the ac but i had spent 600 dollars because they said it had low press, but no matter what was done it would still shut off after 5 minutes driving down the road and it would blow ice cold.Nobody even new it had a temp switch and come to find out it would read 90 degrees when the ac was blowing around 70 degrees thus shutting power off to the clutch. It just needed a simple 30 dollar switch. This would definately be something to check.

I have also read that when A/C is on, and you step on the gas, the A/C is halted to give you all power to accelerate. I don't know how that is done, but something else to look into.

I ordered the high pressure switch last week thinking I might need it. At $16 I thought it was be a good part to have around even if not needed. The switch came in today and I'll try to install it on Sat.

How does the high pressure switch remove/install? Does it screw in/out or pull off?
