PT was the designation for Profile Tall (as in tall body style)- it was then picked up by marketing as Personal Transportation, but not officially.

well, you might not think it wasn't official but the 2001 Chrysler brochure says different:
"The all new 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser has a personality unlike anything else on the road today. Call it a state of mind. It's cool and spacious. It's everything you've always wanted. The PT is for "Personal Transportation" because it reflects PT Cruiser's flexibility and versatility for each individual owner"

Nothing earth-shattering or cute. The PT supposedly refers to Chrylser/Dodge's internal designation of the platform of said vehicle. Since the Neon was on a "PL" "lower" platform (including chassis, engine, etc.) and because the PT was a taller platform; hence the PT nomenclature.
