None taken. I thought it must be that way because the tailgate in mine is hit or miss. Sometimes it will unlock and sometimes not. I'm still gonna try it the next time I find my spare non-chip key.

Indeed metal to metal contact is not required but it's close. With the transponder key sitting on the steering column, the non transponder key doesn't work much less with it in your pocket. If the transponder key is touching or within about 2" of the non transponder key, it works. Interestingly, once the car has seen the key, it no longer cares, you can walk away with the transponder and the non transponder key will keep things going.
