Default Is the Chrysler PT Cruiser a reliable car?

Okay, I'm seriously thinking about getting a 2006-current PT Cruiser as my first car. However, when I asked around to see if the Chrysler PT Cruiser is a reliable car, lots of people were saying it wasn't because it's a heavy car built on an aging Dodge Neon platform.

However, when I researched the PT Cruiser on Edmunds, it says that 2004-current Cruisers have really good reliability.

So, does the 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser have good reliability?

If you regularly maintain it, changing the oil every 3000 miles, changing the timing belt every 80,000, keeping the fluids topped off, and making sure tire pressure is where it should be, yes, it is a reliable car. little things can go wrong, but often there is a cheap and easy fix for them.

My personal mods so far- removed white air restricter, white hibiscus flowers sticker above the rear hatch lock, nice white primer/rust splotch underneath the passenger side tail light from bodywork...more to come once the money starts flowing freer and the car is payed off

All I know is, I got my baby new off the lot in January 2003; I'm a fanatic about maintenance, she's just past 81k miles, in great shape, and we're going on a 2k roadtrip in a couple weeks. I'd get another any day of the week!

I don't get the connection. Yes, the PT is heavy. Yes, it was developed off the Neon - what do those things have to do with reliability????

I'd say the weakest link in a PT is the Auto trans - you can lessen odds of failure with fluid changes, and the failure rate isn't horrific.
Other common failure items are relatively minor - Timing belt must be changed at/before 100,000 miles.

They have weaknesses here and there - fix it yourself for a learning experience. Only 30K on our '05 and had several things replaced all out of warranty, replaced before they went bald because they were so slippery on dry roads the OEM GoodYear tires, Cam Shaft Sensor, front wheel bearing and shaft, Upper motor mount and leaky A/C line.

You can do better for gas mileage and reliability like a Toyota Corolla (best selling car of all time at 32 million cars - more than the Beatle or the Model T), but without the PT's good looks.

That's REALLY misleading. The Model T and VW Beetle looked basically the same thru their life. If you looked at the first Beetle and the last, you would know they were the same car - not so with the Corolla - only the name has continued.
It's like adding up all the 1-ton pickups Ford ever produced. It's advertising hype.

Learn from me...DON'T GET A 2006...just for the mere fact that the powertrain warranty is 3yrs/36K. The only year MA MOPAR did this. The 2007+ PT's have the unlimited/unlimited mileage for the power train warranty which I believe is transferable for free or for a small fee.

I love my 2007 that i bought two months ago with 40 thousand miles on it which drives really nice and if you like them yourself then take a test drive at a dealer.Good luck.

Like all cars, some are good and some aren't so good. I think they are the most reliable cars Chrysler produces. At least according to Consumer Reports. Ours was a used purchase and it's been a PITA. Other folks get some really reliable PTs. Just be aware of what your getting. Probably better to buy new, and be fanatical about the maintenance.

Mine has been very reliable.

Bought it in March at 45k and am approaching 10k miles of use with no issues. I did routine maintenance after I bought it (plugs, wires, rotations, full tranny flush, mobil 1 oil) and the car hasn't let me down.

I did get one CEL about a month after I bought it which turned out to be a $25 O2 sensor.

I'll admit the gas mileage isn't the greatest (21 city, 25 hwy) but I didn't buy it for that. I couldn't be happier with my PT.
