As has been said, go for CCA, but make sure you get the proper type (as in size code) or you'll regret trying to replace it. Only a tiny bit of fudge factor in the battery size on these. T'were me, I'd just hit up Walmart, those Everstart's are really highly rated for long lasting performance.

Go for Odyssey or Deka brand AGM batteries. - Read post #46 here on this Diesel truck forum for why Optima's are now crap...... And Odyssey's rock...... (Diesel trucks take 2 batteries each and require a lot of CCA's to turn over).

I agree with IMMEGT thru personal and bitter experience with a PT and with a Dodge Diesel. I replaced both batteries on my Dodge with Dekka batteries. So far, so good. I am using a 10/2007 date of manufacture $50 Checker flooded cell battery (that I had in indifferent storage) on my PT, which replaced a $150 10/2007 date of manufacture Optima that failed in use. All the Optimas were made in Mexico. Before that, I had been using USA-made Optimas and got 5+ years out of them, which is way beyond amazing here in Arizona. I had until recently recommended Optima batteries to everyone. No more.

The response from Optima was a polite letter with suggestions on how to recharge them. Excuuuuse me. I bought the $150 Optimas to prevent getting stranded in hot weather 100 miles from nowhere in the desert, not to get polite ideas on how to recharge them.

An advantage to an AGM battery is that it will not leak or ooze or emit acid fumes, so your battery cables and battery tray will NEVER corrode. A corroded positive cable will never leave you stuck on a cold morning.

I bought Dekka batteries for the truck because they were USA made and $100 each less than Odyssey batteries, which have super reputations. My truck takes two, and I just didn't have $500 to drop on batteries right then.

If you are going to keep the car, you will not regret buying a good, USA-made AGM battery!

A recent Consumer Reports gives Everstart batteries, available at Walmart, a recommended buy.
Shudder at the mention of 2 of the worst possible companies, with respect to consumers - the bought and paid for "consumer reports" and "re sell stuff stwaight fwom china", and "Lets pay our employees just a touch over minimum wage, and exactly enough hours so we don't have to pay OT, or give "full-time" benefits, oh and recommend that they get on food stamps and state-run healthcare" - "oh and we don't pay women the same as men either" evil corporation wal-mart.

That being said - as far as a battery goes - Walmart's Everstart does exactly the job. No more no less. I've got an everstart in after the original mopar battery died this past summer - had about 5 years on the mopar.

Its been turning the engine over every morning for the past 4 months. One time this summer its going to piss me off that I still have it in there and I'm going AGM. Likely not long after I finish the audio setup and amateur radio install. I had to put her in since thats all I could afford at the time.

I drained one of the everstarts once and cut it apart (years back) It's held together with bubble-gum inside.

I have a 2002 PT with a dead battery ... Advanced Auto WILL NOT replace the battery .. they'll sell me a new one, but the install is way beyond their capabilities .... Maybe chrysler improved the situation in later years, but the early PT's need practically a front end tear down to replace!

Wish you lived closer. I'd do it for you. Assuming that the terminals aren't badly corroded, it takes me about 15 minutes on either my 01 or my 04.

Welcome to the Forum . Maybe if you filled out your profile someone close could suggest something for helping you change it.

They must have changed, I take out my airbox and 5 minutes later I had the battery out.

I found a video on YouTube that explained how to do the battery exchange on a 2001. Althought the battery in the video appeared to be infront of the air box it appears the procedure for pulling the airbox is the same.

I'm going to give it a try on Monday .. thanks for the support folks.

Be sure to put several layers of old towels or plastic over your fender and painted areas. If you dribble battery juice on paint, it can eat it away. That is bad if it happens.

Is your battery leaking? I didn't see that. If it is, then get you a cheap plastic spray bottle and fill it half and half, half water, half clear white vinegar, that will neutralize the acid long enough for you to clean it up. I usually spray it on top of my battery if I see any alchemical buildup, but with today's batteries you shouldn't see that at all.

Anyway, that mixture will really tame any acid leaks...
