Is there such a thing as just changing the trans fluid, without "flushing" it with solvents?

The MoPar document seems to be saying that the chemicals/solvents used in some flushes is what is doing the harm.

But aren't there also procedures that suck out the old fluid and replace it with new? I don't believe that there are solvents used in that case.

My 2001 has ~70k on this trans, so was considering having the fluid transfusion done. Just wondering what others think about that...

I have seen things like a bad ground or low voltage (and likely some resistive/poor connections) cause electronics to be a bit wacky.

I also saw wide variations in temperature with things like using the heater to help cool the air, fans that irregularly come on, road/wind speed differences through the radiator, ...

...and the "metaphysical" one, hot spots and/or pressure leaks from cylinder into the water jacket from blown head gasket making gas pockets in the water as it circulates (that last one is pretty out there/speculative, I know).

The reason I believe that theory is I used steelseal on it and it seemed to clear up the leak into the water jacket... then it blew to the outside (and to the next cylinder) and I could hear it. I know I will tale some heat for that but I did a good deal of homework to get to these wild ideas. I have also speculated that steal or pressure/air pockets may affect temperature transducers differently. As the water cycles around it seems like maybe it would do like a vapor lock, maybe creating a gas pocket in the water pump, maybe only temporarily.

...Oh yea, the Steelseal... Once it blew from cylinder to cylinder (I learned after seeing the gasket) or to air or to oil journals steelseal is useless because it needs a hot spot AND coolant mixed with the chemical to cause a polymerization (ok, fancy term for chemical reaction that makes the steelseal solidify.) There are other reactions that might work when coming into contact with air and reducing pressure, I think that is what JB-Weld's chemicals are supposed to do. So much for coolant leaks.

Sorry for the random stuff, I am certified ADD. It helps me analyze but sometimes too much.

OK, take it easy with the heat, I am serious.

That's what most of us mean by a flush - no solvents, just new fluid.
Old method was drop the pan & dump fluid - that gets less than half the fluid - a flushing machine pumps new fluid in, take old fluid out and gets all the fluid.
Be sure only ATF + 4 is used.

On my 01, I have installed a Dorman transmission pan with a drain plug. At each oil change, I have the option of also draining 4 quarts of transmission fluid and refilling. (The drain plug and gasket that the Dorman pan came with was a joke. I changed the plug assembly to a Motormite which solved the drip drip drip.)

I agree that changing out 4 quarts of transmission fluid won't change it all. Over time, it is nearly equal to a full fluid change. For those of us that like to overanalyze things, Zeno's paradox does actually apply here.

Since I have 150kilomiles and I do not know what the prior owner did or did not do regarding the change, I can never change the fluid completely because I cannot go back in time. Any wear which has been this far will still exist.

...sorry, coudn't resist the dichotomous.

I also have found that in order to read and understand the manual one must have read and understood the manual... wadda bitch!

This could be fun but the thread may suffer a bit... maybe two magnets will help catch up!
