Default Disabling the PT Security System?

An ongoing thread discusses the cost of acquiring and programming keys for the PT -- all because of the onboard security system.

Is it possible to remove and/or disable that system?

As our cars get older (mine has 246,000 miles) stuff like this will become a maintenance issue... especially as Chrysler deletes dealers and morphs into a new company.

My sense is that you cannot remove or disable it, but I hope I'm wrong.

It's disabled until you activate it with the key-fob...

Not quite right.. It also activates when you lock the doors.. You have to have a chipped key to disarm it when you use the key to unlock the door..

In short no.. and you don't really want to since the PCM will be unhappy the RKE(the alarm module) isn't there and throw a code and CEL for it..

Parts are out there and they are getting cheaper especially for the 01-05 cars.. Over a million of that gen alone built..

My personal thanks to veteran and novice crewbies that have offered information and how-to's they have been instrumental in taking LiquidPT from modded car to stock to live a more quiet and sedate life.

A friends kid does remote start installs and he said you hard wire a key under the dash

Don't know the details though.

You have to do that for remote starts. They just cut the key portion off and tape the grey chip part under the dash.. Honestly not safe in some parts of the country. Even though I see the benefit of a remote start now that I live in a climate that gets snow and you need to warm the car up before you can go anywhere sometimes..

Still not worth the risk of the car driving away with me not at the wheel... Need the car more than I need the ease of not dealing with an alarm system.

Before this car, I've never had an alarm

So the key has a transmitter, it's not a hard wired thing?

I'd think that thieves would know the PT has a security system, so wouldn't even try? I live life on the edge

It's called a transponder key...too involved to go into detail here but you can easily research it if you are interested.

Thanks everybody. I was afraid of that.

More than anything I want to get rid of the thick, chip-emplanted key, but I'm also worried that sooner or later it will malfunction and strand me someplace.

Oh well.... thanks again for the info. Everybody on this board has been very helpful and patient with my newb questions...
