Is the center console gear selector supposed to light up?

I'm in the process of finalizing the purchase of a 2006 PT Cruiser, certified used with under 19,000 miles from a Chrysler dealership.

I test drove the vehicle at night. It's an automatic.

When I turned on the exterior lights, I noticed there was no light illuminating the gear shift selection on the center console (the little strip to the left of the gear shifter that tells you if you're in "P", "R", "D", "2", "1", etc.)

I turned up and down the interior lights, but it's just completely black down there.

The sales guy seemed to think that it didn't ever light up but I thought that pretty strange. I've never had a PT Cruiser before, but I've never seen any kind of car where the gear shift indicator didn't light up so you could see what gear you're selecting.

So, my question: Is this supposed to light up?

I have a 2008 basic with automatic and, yes, mine does light up at night.

Thanks, everyone. Sure enough, I put up a bit of a fuss and the sales guy decided he'd have the services department take a look -- sure enough, bad bulb.

Working now, and I brought the vehicle home tonight.

Inferno Red 2006 with 19,000 miles and still 2 years left on the warranty!

But a question - I thought warranties were either 3/36 or 7/70 - so what is yours?

The warranty on this cruiser was 6-year/80,000 miles. It ends in 2011, giving me 2 years remaining.

I'm not sure if it's anything special, but that's what is written in my purchase agreement.

Is something odd going on here? Should it have been 7 years?
