Default Dimming Interior Lights

My wife has a 2003 PT Cruiser. Over the past year we have had a strange problem with the interior light.s On occassion the odomoter light and the light on the radio will all of a sudden go dim and the interior dome light will not turn on. Sometimes, the lights for the tach and speedometer will dim to. It may do it for 5 minutes, maybe 20 and then go back to normal. It has no effect on the performance of the vehicle, headlights or radion. It has been to the dealer numerous times and they "think" they fix it but they never do. Any ideas?

The rheostat that controls the dimming can burn a spot over time causing carbon or even dust build-up, turn the control back-and-forth a few times - that might clean the spot. If that does not work, it's time to replace it.
