Default battery light and burning rubber smell

help! my daughters 2001 pt cruiser limited edition, smells like some rubber burning, all the fluids and oil levels are good, and the battery light also keeps coming on. we are taking it to a mechanic later today, but i would love to hear if anyone else had similiar problems. please any input would be so helpful.

pull airbox and inspect for bad cables and leaking battery.

Since on a 01 you can see the battery crud can build up to gross proportions and cause problems if you don't get in there and check it once and a while..

Not much to go on.
any sounds? I'm thinking maybe belt for alternator is slipping? That would cause smell and battery light.

How many miles on it? Could be alternator going bad.

Agree with QSD!
Look there first. If the alternator is frozen up, that would cause the belt to burn.
Take it to the sealer; or at least an auto zone to test the alternator.
