Exclamation PT Starting Issue - Please Help Me Out Here

Hey everybody, I have a 2003 PT Cruiser. It has been working wonderfully up until now. I insert my key, turn... and the engine starts (sounds beautiful, like new)... then idles for 2-3 seconds, then just dies. What in the world is causing this?

Jake,

Does the engine light come on at all? If it does they'll be a code set in the computer that will help us diagnose your problem.

Sounds like it might be the anti-theft protection. Same key you've always used?

Your right Don, forgot all about that. The security system will allow the car to start and then if it doesn't recognize the right code it will cut the engine off.
I found this on PT Do-It-Yourself.net:

Dick Reed wrote, I had a problem with my 2001 PT that I would like to share with other owners. Initially, the PT spontaneously started the security system panic alarm. When I tried to start the PT it ran 3 seconds then quit, then would not turn over at all. (Normally, the engine will shut down after 3 seconds if the sentry transponder key code does not match the code programmed into the Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIM)). I called the dealer and he suggested charging the battery, which resulted in no change. I paid for the tow and 1 hour labor, and they said they charged it (With The Key On: dealer didn't mention that when I called) and everything was fine. One year later, in 10-degree weather the issue occurred again. The alarm went off spontaneously. The PT started and quit within 3 seconds then wouldn't turn over. I started the charging process with the key on, not taking much current. I decided to clean the battery cables and terminals, which resolved the problem. Apparently, when the connection is bad, rather than turn over slowly, it shuts down the sentry and/or electronic system. I hope this helps save someone else some money and aggravation.

Hahaha, I think it was the key issue! I will keep you all updated on this issue. That's pretty cool, I had heard of SKIM a long time ago, but ignored it, guess it does affect me, lol. And yes, I was using a different key both these times.
