Unhappy Engine light came on...

Hi,

So I have a 2002 PT Cruiser, roughly 78k. Left work, started it, and the engine light is on. Never had a problem before like this... I got a tune up about two months ago, mechanic said the engine was great.

I'm overdue for an oil change (needed it done about 3k ago), and my friend left
the gas cap off for about 10 minutes yesterday. Aside from that, I don't know anything else that's different.

... Okay, so I ran the codes, and got P1684 which means that the battery has been disconnected within the last
50 starts, which is not entirely true ( I did have to replace a six month old battery a few weeks ago, but I've
certainly started it more than 50 times...) so I'm wondering if I have a new problem...

I also got the code P0455, which means that there is apparently a large leak in the evaporative system. Now, my
friend did leave the cap off yesterday for about ten minutes, but he put it back on and may not have tightened it
enough... could this possibly throw up a P0455 code?

Install the fuel cap properly and in a few cycles the code will clear and the lamp will extinguish.

Okay, the "check engine" light did clear, but I'm still running the
P0455 Code. I didn't remove the negative terminal from the car
battery...

I took it to a shop just to make sure everything was okay, and
both shops were all, "A P0455 code doesn't run just for a loose
gas cap" (which is odd because it NEVER ran before until that
happened the other night... whatev...) and so both shops are
trying to tell me that I probably have a "major leak" in my
EVAP system and that I'll have to have a smoke test and
blah blah blah... one shop stated that it'll take an hour to diagnose,
another shop stated that because "it's a PT Cruiser" it'll take a
"couple of hours to diagnose". Gotta love mechanics that try
to pull one over on ya...

So really, is a P0455 code always indicative of a major leak, or
could it just have been the gas cap? I am definitely having it
looked at before I head out again tomorrow (got another cross
country trip to make in it ), but I'm not looking to get taken
by a mechanic.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

It really could have been your gas cap, if you leave it off it will do that. It becomes a major leak.

You said it yourself, you didn't clear the code so you'll have the fault code stored in the computer until you do or someone with a scanner clears it for you.

Red face Re: Engine light came on...

Okay...

So my friend left the gas cap off for a while on Tuesday night... and I started the car, drove it for a while... It's been started at least four times since then.
The "check engine" light and P0455 code came up on Wednesday night, over 24 hours later.

Could the gas cap being off for ten minutes over 24 hours prior cause this?

The only mechanic I trust is over 600 miles away , and well, I know this
car is used, but it's had one owner, and it's at 78K, no accidents, and
pretty well-maintained...

I'm just wondering if the gas cap being off over 24 hours prior could cause that.
Hope so...

Thanks everyone!

Eh, I apologize... I'm kind of asleep.
All I meant was that if the gas cap was off and replaced on Tuesday
night, would that cause the light to come on on Wed night?

Just weird that it's 24 hrs later...

Didn't happen on my PT but yes, It did happen just that way on my wife's KIA. Hadn't put gas in it for about 24 hours and all of a sudden the fault light showed up. Thought about it since it was happening on so many PT's and I just let it go and it went off a day later.

Confirmed the code at the dealer since the KIA doesn't have the key trick.

Let's put this one to bed.

As Cruzin said; as I said--the gas cap off can/will throw a P0445. This is an emissions code---one of the things any mechanic can get in a bundle of trouble with the local EPA types if they just clear the code and do not test/check out the system and ensure that all is just peachy keen.

Does it make money for the repair facility? You bet it does! Did the repair guys start this issue--NO THEY DID NOT--Thank the California Legislature!!!!

This code will pass after 255 cycles of the key. Why 255? Becasue the eprom is a 256k chip 0-255=256 cycles of the key.

This one was a good learning experience that has not yet cost you $250.00. The avearge cost of emission testing and fault clearning--entire job in actual time is less that 60 minutes for an average mechanic. You on the other hand pay for minimum shop time 1 hr. Computer usage. Smoke system. EPA fees. Taxes---get the $250.00 picture. That said--the cost all the systems used and the overhead cost makes $250.00 a reasonable price!

Aren't you glad you gave us a visit!
