Default 2001 PT manual not shifting when running

Hi, I just bought a 2001 PT with a manual tranny and it's been running fine for the last week. Earlier today my wife said it seemed like it was getting a little tough to shift. I drove and it seemed a little stiff but was still shifting. About an hour ago, I got back in it and it wouldn't shift at all when running but shifts stiffly when off. If I put it in first or reverse, then turn her on she will move but not shift out of gear. Anyone have an idea what this might be? I'm just hoping it's not gonna need a new transmission

thanks!!

Welcome to the Forum. Methinks it is the bushings going bad.

Your clutch is not disengaging. It is hydraulically activated. Make sure the clutch fluid reservoir is full. (It is located near the firewall near the brake fluid reservoir.)

Thanks for the help!! Is that something particularly difficult to replace? The only car I've ever done any work on is my old '83 scirocco which never had any transmission problems... are these the ones you are talking about?

Yes, I checked that. There is fluid in there.

On the advice from another site, I put the car into fifth and started it to see if the wheels would move indicating a bad clutch. It stalled out and then started shifting again normally while running!!! I'm assuming there is still something wrong, but what?

OK...good, the reservoir is full...the rules out a leak. Does clutch feel soft and squishy? If so, the master or slave cylinder is going bad. Got to find out why the clutch is not disengaging.

Hard to say, it's certainly softer that my VW's clutch, but that is a very old car. I've never driven a manual made after '85. So I don't really know what they should feel like. It doesn't seem like it is too soft.

ok, it happened again today... I did the same thing: put it into fifth to stall out, and it started working again... any ideas?

Suggest you try PTCrew - more gearheads there.
