Default Should I buy an '02

Hello folks - I'm brand new to the forum. I've driven a few PT's in the past for work and a rental.

I'm considering buying a Lmt. Ed. '02. Black with purple flames...

65K on the miles, its going for $5,995 with a clear carfax. 3 previous owners.

Any thoughts on the value, advice of what to look for etc...

I'm going to the dealer to check it out tomorrow.

p.s. my wife is going to kill me when she sees the purple flames. : )

Any help, thoughts, etc.... is greatly appreciated by this newbie.

I can fix almost anything.

Lots of new folks coming here that just picked up an 01 or 02, but mostly they are here because of a problem. You almost can't buy a 10 year old car and not expect some trouble.

There are know things on the PT to look out for. The whole front suspension including the front wheel bearings. Have the engine checked out including a compression check and look for any sings of oil leaks. Run the car with the A/C on and let it sit idling for at least 10 minutes to see if the temperature guage stay exactly in the middle. It should not raise about half way at all if everything is working right. Go thru all the gears at a good clip and hit the brakes hard. With or without ABS it should come to a decent stop without pulling to one side.

Thanks.

I'm not much of a mechanic myself, so I'll bring the car to one I trust to have it checked out.

Thanks again.

Have those things that Crewzin mentioned checked because those are the issues with the PT, also take in consideration the mileage and that it needs the timing belt done with the water pump at 100k, it isn't cheap. The purple flames sound cool to me.

Much appreciated advice.

Any thoughts on the value of this one?

It seems like a decent deal to me, and I imagine they will go down on the price a bit.

I've shopped around for newer models with less miles, but I can pay cash for this one and I like the idea of owning it straight out, without payments etc..

(The flames really bring a smile to my face

It sounds like a good deal. I would put my nose real close to the floor mats in a few places to see IF you can smell mold. This may be a salvage car that has been underwater. It puzzles me that a car with that few miles has had 3 owners so far.

A used car is worth as much as you want to pay for it. If your happy with the price, that's all that matters.

what is KBB value on it??

Dont rush and buy the first one you see, go look at craigslist, autotrader, cars.com. THere are plenty of PT's out there for sale. You should be able to pick one up for the low end on dealer retail if you go that route and ditto private party value.

Look at and drive a few. THen you will educate yourself on what is a good one and bad one.

Lastly when you pull the tirgger have a mechanic check it out first before you write the check.

Thanks be to all who answered.

I had a look at her today along with a few others on the lot.

Things seems to check out pretty well, although there be a few "fashion" specs I could live without - To be expected from an eight year old car.

I'lll return after the weekend, and if she's still there, I'll haggle for a lower price.

Thanks again for your help, this is great forum.
