Default Overheating Issue

Hey guys, here's the scenario. My wife and I bought a 2002 PT Touring Edition last august. It had 134k miles on it at the time. Fast forward to now. We are overheating severly. I have replaced the thermostat as well as the radiator cap to the same issues. When we run the car and it heats up to halfway on the guage, it starts the coolant to boiling. My question is, what are some common fixes for this, as I have been reading that overheating issues on the Cruiser is not an uncommon occurance.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
If you've been reading about the overheating problems, you must have seen where the main culprit is the 2 speed fan.

Did you bleed the coolant system of excess air after you replaced the thermostat? Did you replace the lost coolant with the recommended type (HOAT)?

To find out if it's the fan, go for a ride about 35mph+ and see if you still have the overheating problem after you get all the air out of the system. The computer shuts the fan off at that speed and there should be enough air coming through the radiator to keep things cool IF everything else is good. As you slow down, the fan should come on and keep everything cool, if not you'll start to overheat.

You can also try something else. At idle, turn the A/C on and see if your fan comes on at the same time. It should.

Other reasons are a clogged radiator, air in the coolant system and a cracked head gasket. But lets rule out one thing at a time.

Mike, did you put the thermostat in backwards? And, like Cruzin mentioned, did you bleed the air out? Check a picture of the thermostat's placement to see if it's not turned the opposite way you put it in.

I hope it's something that obvious.

Tim
