Question Blowing Multifunction Switch Fuse (Non-Fog Lamp car)

A couple months ago our 2001 PT (160k miles) started blowing the multifunction switch fuse whenever the turn signals were turned on. I replaced the multifunction switch with a new one purchased from RockAuto.com and this resolved the problem immediately.

However, it only worked for 1 month. Now, as soon as you turn the key to "run", the fuse will blow. This time the fuse blows regardless of whether the turn signal is on or if the wiper is on. As soon as the key turns to "run", then boom, fuse is gone.

Do you think my second "new" multifunction switch is simply bad? Or is it possible that something in the car is causing the multifunction switches to go bad?

Any other ideas? Like I mentioned in the subject, this car does not have fog lights.

Sure sounds like you have a short in the wiring someplace, probably in the steering column. You probably helped it when replacing the switch but now it's shorting out the same as it was before. Some owners have reported that the wiring harness was being stretched somehow when the steering wheel itself was moved or adjusted.

Luckily it seems that the problem was being caused because the flasher module had wiggled half-way out of the new multifunction switch. I pushed it back in, taped it in place, and installed a new fuse. No more blown fuses and it seems to be working perfectly now.

Thanks!
