Sorry to hear about your crash but I've been on this forum for 8 years and your the first that I've ever seen talk about a seat belt failure. No, it's not common.

I Googled "PT Cruiser Seatbelt Failure" and only came up with 2 cases of seat belts locking up and both were the rear seat (middle) and they happened when the belts were attached as if someone was sitting in the seat and the owners folded the seats forward. The belts lock u and won't release.

Are you the original owner? It may have been in an accident before and the tensioners not replaced. They must be replaced after the airbags deploy. They can never be reused.

If there was a problem with the tensioners, the airbag light would have been on. Failure of the tensioners is almost unheard of. We've never seen it happen at our dealership.

I highly suggest you report this to Chrysler and the IIHS. There may have been a manufacturing flaw and this may happen to other people. Chrysler and the IIHS will investigate and if necessary, may issue a recall.

Please don't let this go unreported!

Cool Re: Is Seat Belt Tensioner Failure Common?

Never heard a complaint in 3 years of watching multiplte cruiser forums.
Wonder if your foot on the dash had anything to do with it?
How much do you weigh??
There is (I believe) a 100 lb threshold for the seat sensor to "lock" that belt.
I know that is why they do not recommend small children or small adults in the pass side front seat. (That is in the user's manual)

Just kinda curious here. When I go back and read over the thread, you don't make any specific mention of your airbag going off. Did it? The tensioner will only activate upon airbag deployment.

For the record, there's no 100lb threshold or any threshold for that matter for the tensioner. It always goes off when the airbag goes off. The "seat sensor", or occupancy sensor, either enables or disables the airbag itself depending on the weight placed in the seat. That's why if the seat is empty the airbag won't go off, and of course neither will the tensioner.
